The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones doesn’t open until August, but Sony Pictures must have a lot of faith in it, as they’re already planning a prequel, with THR reporting that Stephanie Sanditz has been hired to script an adaptation of the first novel in Cassandra Clare’s related series of books, Infernal Devices, which is called Clockwork Angel.
The Mortal Instruments is about a girl who learns of her half-human, half-angel heritage, who gets thrust into the war between light and shadow. Infernal Devices is set in in England during the Victorian Age ten years after the peace treaties between the demon-fighting Shadowhunters and Downworlders (vampires, fairies, werewolves, and warlocks) was signed. Clockwork Angel begins the story of Tessa, an orphaned teenage girl who is looking for her brother, who has disappeared, and seeks her true identity.
Her search plunges her into a world she never knew existed, and reveals talents she never knew she had. She must forge an alliance with Shadowhunters if she wants to survive in this dangerous world.
Of course this film will depend on the success of Mortal Instuments, but it certainly seems that there are big franchise plans.
