Due to the way I was forced to play it in school, I have an innate dislike of rugby, but having watched the new video from the Manchester Spartans gay-inclusive rugby team, I’m starting to feel like I could change my mind.
The six-minute vid, which is essentially a bit of a recruitment tool and something they hope will break down barriers, is beautifully made and surprisingly inspiring. The sight of the rugby players going out amongst the drag queens and clubbers of Canal Street is very different than the image many people have of it being a sport that’s inherently unwelcoming to LGBT people. In fact the Spartans are completely the opposite.
As one of the players comments, “It was the confidence of having all these people behind me that made me realize I’m now prepared and happy to accept who I am… I knew that the support I got from the rugby team, if anybody rejected me and made me feel uncomfortable I’ve now got a true network of friends that will support me.”
Take a look at the great video below.
