Over the past couple of weeks there been a bit of an upsurge on Twitter, asking Disney to give Elsa a girlfriend in the sequel to Frozen, with the #GiveElsaAGirlfriend hashtag. The character is already a bit of an LGBT icon, not least thanks to the anthem Let It Go, many feel it would top things off if she got a girlfriend.
Turns out the character’s voice actress, Idina Menzel, certainly wouldn’t mind – but then, with the Tony-winner having been in the first cast of Rent, you wouldn’t expect her to have too much of an issue with all things LGBT. Entertainment Tonight talked to her at the Billboard Music Awards about the campaign, with the actress and singer saying, “I think it’s great. Disney’s just gotta contend with that. I’ll let them figure that out.”
She also added that she’d be happy to stick with the character “no matter what”, as Elsa “changed her life.”
Of course, having Idina open to it is very different to Disney actually giving Elsa a same-sex relationship. And considering their track record in their animated movies, it’s pretty unlikely, but we can dream. Frozen 2 is expected in cinemas in 2018.
