A couple of years ago there was plenty of excitement about the return to gay Manchester for writer Russell T Davies more than 15 years after Queer As Folk with the interlinked series Cucumber, Banana and Tofu. While the show itself got a fairly muted critical response, that hasn’t stopped people planning a US version.
Allan Heinberg – who’s currently riding high after writing Wonder Woman – has set up Adult Behaviour at Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal producer Shondaland. Deadline describes the show as ‘a sexy, multi-generational, comedic drama inspired by Queer As Folk creator and Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies’ 2015 British TV series Cucumber and Banana.’
That suggests there may be a few changes from the British version, which focused on a middle-aged gay man, going through a series of crises following the breakdown of his relationship, when one of them wants to get married and the other doesn’t. In the US, Banana and Cucumber aired on Logo. Adult Behaviour meanwhile is being developed with the hope it will land on the major network, ABC.
Heinberg as worked with mega-producer Shonda Rhimes and her Shondaland Production Company for over a decade, on shows including Grey’s, Scandal and The Catch. He also wrote an episode of HBO’s gay-themed show, Looking.
Zee says
It can only be a huge improvement on the UK original (as the US Queer As Folk was). Russell T. Davies speechifying, hysterical dialogue encourage gross overacting on both shows.
