He’s currently shooting One Shot with Tom Cruise, but writer/director Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Way Of The Gun) already has his eye on the future, as Deadline reports he has a follow-up planned with Rubicon. It’s designed as a full-on multi-platform project, which will be turned into a movie, a graphic novel, and a video game.
Announced at New York Comic Con, the concept centres on a Navy SEAL team battling the Taliban. The movie, graphic novel, and video game will be developed simultaneously, with each version featuring separate storylines. The project is described as Seven Samurai set in Afghanistan. McQuarrie will write, direct, and produce the movie.
Here’s what he had to say about the project, “I’ve always been fascinated with Navy SEALs in general and their role in Afghanistan in particular. With Rubicon, Mark Long and Dan Capel (producers) have created the perfect environment for an intense action franchise.”
In case you’re wondering what a ‘Rubicon’ is, it’s a reference to a river in Italy made famous when Julius Caesar and his army crossed it, sparking the war that led to him becoming ruler of the Roman world. Since then ‘Crossing the Rubicon’ has come to mean reaching a point of no return.
