Having spent years being good without anyone paying much attention (which to be honest, if you’re being good in a supporting role in The Gilmore Girls, perhaps isn’t that shocking), this year the world finally woke up to the existence of Melissa McCarthy.
She had a huge hit in the form of Bridesmaids and then won an Emmy, presumably for rising above the dreadful mediocrity of her sitcom, Mike & Molly.
Now she’s adding screenwriter to her CV, as THR reports that New Line has purchased her script, Tammy, a comedy that she will also executive produce and possibly star in. The screenplay is about a woman who loses her job at a fast food restaurant and then finds out her husband is cheating on her. She goes on a road trip with her foul-mouthed, hard-drinking grandmother to escape the problems in her life.
McCarthy commented, “It’s about these two women who are not where they thought they would be, and then they kind of band together. It’s just my perfect tone. It’s so funny, and it also kind of breaks my heart.” The actress will next appear in Judd Apatow’s This Is Forty, and she is also penning a movie with Bridesmaids co-writer Annie Mumolo.
