Sometimes a movie bombing hideously can be a good thing – if you want to make your own movie out of the same story, at least. This time last year The Nutcracker In 3D was released, which normally would have made it difficult for anyone else to get a Nutcracker project off the ground for a few years.
However, as the 2010 movie bombed spectacularly and got some of the most vicious reviews imaginable, it’s already been forgotten enough that Adam Shankman can step forward with his own take on the Nutcracker.
Deadline reports that Hairspray director Shankman is teaming up with New Line Cinema to produce a new adaptation of the holiday classic. Despite Shankman’s background as a choreographer, the film will be based on the original 1815 story, ‘The Nutcracker and the Mouse King’ by E.T.A. Hoffmann, as opposed to Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet. The story follows the adventures of a young girl and her magical wooden toy soldier who comes to life and does battle with the Mouse King.
Darren Lemke, who most recently wrote Jack the Giant Killer, is adapting the screenplay. New Line is setting up the holiday fantasy as a tent pole holiday film for 2013.
