Every year on the day before the Oscars, the Independent Spirit Awards hands out its gongs to the movies that often get overlooked by the Academy, but which deserve recognition nevertheless. One of this year’s Spirit winners was the acclaimed Lesbian drama Pariah, about an African American teen dealing with growing up gay. Producer Nekisa Cooper and director Dee Rees were on hand to accept the Cassavetes award, which is given to a narrative film with a budget of $500,000 or less in the spirit of legendary indie moviemaker John Cassavetes. In the video above, you can see them accepting the award.
There’s no UK release date set for Pariah yet, but with all the awards and acclaim it can only be a matter of time.
