The main way for fans to find out early what a movie is going to be called is to keep an eye on domain name registrations. A studio has to buy the domains before they announce the title (to stop the inevitable cyber-squatters), but there’s no way to keep those registrations completely secret.
Now fans think they may have found the title of Star Trek 2, as MarkMonitor, a popular domain registry – the same registry in fact that secured the title for Paramount Pictures’ G.I. Joe Retaliation – has confirmed that both www.startrekintodarkness.com and www.startrekintodarknessmovie have been registered as Internet website domains.
This, of course, has led to the speculation that the new title of Star Trek 2 is now Star Trek Into Darkness. While most sites have been reporting it without a colon, there’s no real reason to suppose it won’t be Star Trek: Into Darkness, which would certainly be less clunky.
At this time, the title has been neither confirmed nor denied by the studio, but with the movie out next year, an official announcement and title treatment must be imminent. (Source: ComingSoon)
