It was tough being gay in the 1950s, and even more so if you were in the public eye and one of the most famous men in the world. That’s the position Hollywood teen idol Tab Hunter found himself in, living one life publicly – incuding going on studio mandated dates with women – and another privately. Hunter recounted his experiences of coming to terms with his sexuality and his experiences of being a gay star in the 50s in his memoir, Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making of a Movie Star.
That was then turned into an acclaimed documentary of the same name in 2015 (you can read our review here), and it’s now set to inspire a movie with Hollywood hotshot JJ Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) producing, alongside his Star Trek colleague, Zachary Quinto.
According to THR, as well as dealing with Hunter’s experiences of being gay in 50s Hollywood – which included being blackmailed, semi-outed and being put under immense pressure – it will also dramatise his love affair with Anthony Perkins, the actor best known for playing Norman Bates in Hitchcock’s Psycho. The role of Perkins is one it’s easy to see Quinto stepping into, but there’s been no confirmation of that.
Pulitzer Prize-winner Doug Wright will write the screenplay, with 86-year-old Hunter giving the film his backing, and his longtime partner, Allan Glaser, producing. There’s no news on when we might see the movie.

While there’s been a lot of comment about whether Finn and Poe Dameron might end up being the Star Wars movie’s first gay couple (based on their bromance in The Force Awakens), it’s not really been mentioned that the franchise could have had a gay character long before that – Luke Skywalker. Although he was shown having some interest in Leia, before he found out she was his sister, he never really had a romance of his own, and seemed as interested in men as women.

The first teaser for Star Wars: The Force Awakens very deliberately avoiding showing us any of the classic Star Wars characters, despite the fact he knew the likes of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher would be returning.
While there was a brief moment where it looked liked you’d have to go to one of a few select cinemas to see the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer, it’s not being that picky, as the teaser has been posted online and you can watch it below.
Even before the notoriously secretive JJ Abrams came onboard, Disney was keeping the possible full titles of Star Wars Episode VII close to its chest. However, with the House Of Mouse announcing that principal photography has officially come to an end, they’ve also decided to let us know what the movie will actually be called.
There had been an assumption that when JJ Abrams signed up to make Star Wars Episode VI, he would also make part VII and IX too. However it turns out he won’t, as it’s been announced that Looper and Brick director Rian Johnson has been hired to write and helm Star Wars: Episode VIII and Star Wars: Episode IX, according to
