BlacKkKlansman Trailer – Spike Lee tells the true story of a black man infiltrating the Klan

May 16, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

At its Cannes debut yesterday BlacKkKlansman was met with a rapturous response and a 10-minute standing ovation, with many saying Spike Lee’s movie captures the zeitgeist, using a true story from the past to talk about modern race issues and the bigotry of the Trump era.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From visionary filmmaker Spike Lee comes the incredible true story of an American hero. It’s the early 1970s, a time of great social upheaval as the struggle for civil rights rages on. Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) becomes the first African-American detective on the Colorado Springs Police Department, but his arrival is greeted with skepticism and open hostility by the department’s rank and file. Undaunted, Stallworth resolves to make a name for himself and a difference in his community. He bravely sets out on a dangerous mission: infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan.

Posing as a racist extremist, Stallworth contacts the group and soon finds himself invited into its inner ‘circle. He even cultivates a relationship with the Klan’s Grand Wizard, David Duke (Topher Grace), who praises Ron’s commitment to the advancement of White America. With the undercover investigation growing ever more complex, Stallworth’s colleague, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), poses as Ron in face-to-face meetings with members of hate group, gaining insider’s knowledge of a deadly plot. Together, Stallworth and Zimmerman team up to take down the organization whose real aim is to sanitize its violent rhetoric to appeal to the mainstream.

‘Produced by the team behind the Academy-Award® winning Get Out, BlacKkKlansman offers an unflinching, true-life examination of race relations in 1970s America that is just as bracingly relevant in today’s tumultuous world.’

The film hits cinemas in August. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote Trailer – Terry Gilliam’s passion project is finally on its way

April 8, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Terry Gilliam’s quest to get The Man Who Killed Don Quixote made has been so beset by disasters that it spawned a feature-length documentary about it, 2002’s Lost In La Mancha. In case you don’t know the story, after several years of trying to get it off the ground, the movie finally went into production in 2000, with Johnny Depp and Jean Rochefort starring. However very quickly a combination of factors, ranging from Rochefort getting seriously ill to a storm wrecking the sets, meant to the whole thing had to be called off.

Over the years Gilliam has tried on numerous occasions to get it off the ground again, but a range of issues, mainly surrounding financing, means it’s never happened. Until now that is. However, even now the problems haven’t ended as while it’s in the can and pretty much completed, a court case over who owns the rights has been launched, which means it can’t be screened at Cannes as originally planned.

It doesn’t help either that Gilliam angered many with recent tone deaf comments about the #metoo movement, which seemed to blame women for being harassed and sought to excuse men from repercussions.

However, the first trailer for the movie has now arrived. Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Man Who Killed Don Quixote tells the story of a deluded old man (Jonathan Pryce) who is convinced he is Don Quixote, and who mistakes Toby (Adam Driver), an advertising executive, for his trusty squire, Sancho Panza. The pair embark on a bizarre journey, jumping back and forth in time between the 21st and magical 17th century. Gradually, like the infamous knight himself, Toby becomes consumed by the illusory world and unable to determine his dreams from reality. The tale culminates in a phantasmagorical and emotional finale where Toby takes on the mantle of Don Quixote de la Mancha.’ [Read more…]

Logan Lucky (Blu-ray Review) – Steven Soderbergh takes Channing Tatum on a blue collar heist

December 29, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Riley Keough, Daniel Craig, Katie Holmes
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Running Time: 116 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: December 26th 2017 (UK)

Director Steven Soderbergh hasn’t done very well at retiring. After a career that’s ranged from Sex Lies & Videotape, Erin Brockovich and Traffic to the Ocean’s 11 trilogy, Out Of Sight and Magic Mike, he announced that his last feature film as a director would be 2013’s Liberace biopic, Behind The Candelabra. However, just four years later he’s back with Logan Lucky.

What appears to have brought him back wasn’t just the story and script, but that they managed to find a way to essentially cut out the usual mainstream film machine by pre-selling foreign distribution and TV/streaming rights and then releasing the movie in the US himself. [Read more…]

New Logan Lucky Trailer – Channing Tatum & Adam Driver star in Steven Soderbergh’s heist flick

June 29, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few years ago, director Magic Mike and Ocean’s 11 helmer Steven Soderbergh announced that he wasn’t going to direct any more feature films. However, as with his many earlier threats to retire, it’s turned out to be premature, as he’s now returning with Logan Lucky, his first film since 2013. The new movie has been described as being a bit of an anti-Ocean’s 11, with people going on a heist but stripping out the glamour.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum) is from a blue-collar family from the hills of West Virginia, whose clan has been famous for its bad luck for nearly 90 years. After being fired from his job, and with his ex-wife (Katie Holmes) threatening to move out of State taking their daughter with her, Jimmy decides he has to do something to get his family’s life back on track. With a little help from his brother Clyde Logan (Adam Driver), his sister Mellie (Riley Keough) and an incarcerated explosive expert, the aptly named Joe Bang (Daniel Craig), he plans to steal $14 million from the Charlotte Motor Speedway on the busiest race day of the year.

irected by Academy Award-winner Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven, Magic Mike, Traffic), Logan Lucky also stars Hilary Swank, Seth MacFarlane, Katherine Waterston, Sebastian Stan, and Brian Gleeson.’

Logan Lucky is out in the UK on August 25th. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

Logan Lucky Trailer – Steven Soderbergh teams with Channing Tatum & Adam Driver for a heist

The movie is about two brothers, Jimmy (Channing Tatum) and Clyde (Adam Driver), who attempt to pull off a heist during a NASCAR race in North Carolina. That involves them needing the help of the seemingly nutty Joe Bang (Daniel Craig). The impressive cast also includes Riley Keough, Katherine Waterston, Dwight Yoakam, Seth MacFarlane, Macon Blair, Hilary Swank, Sebastian Stan, and Katie Holmes.

Logan Lucky is out in the US in August. No UK date is currently set. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Trailer – Rey, Finn, Poe, Leia & Luke are striking back

April 14, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you were hoping for the first trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi to give you a full rundown of the plot, you’ll be disappointed. Instead – and as most expected – it’s more about teasing the movie and getting people excited. Plot-wise, all we learn is the Rey will be practicing her Jedi skills and that the bad guys think the Jedi should end.

Nothing too surprising there then!

It does all look pretty cool though, with the return of Finn, Poe and Rey, as well as a glimpse of Leia and the voice of Luke Skywalker. There’s also plenty of drama, Kylo Ren looking suitable evil, and som spaceship action.

Take a look at the first trailer and poster below. [Read more…]

Sylvester Stallone & Adam Driver Teaming For Tough As They Come

January 4, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although Sylvester Stallone’s skills as an actor have often been debated, it’s often forgotten that he’s also an Oscar-nominated screenwriter and a pretty decent director. However, his jaunts behind the camera have been fairly irregular, with the last being 2010’s The Expendables.

Now he’s planning another movie as director, and as with all the other movies he’s helmed, he’ll also star. He already lined up an interesting co-star, with Deadline reporting that Adam Driver will also be part of the film.

The movie in question is Tough as They Come, based on, ‘The true tale of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Mills, one of only five soldiers to survive a quadruple amputation from a battlefield injury. At the heart of the story is the soldier’s relationship with his father-in-law, who stood by his side from the day he got home from the hospital. Driver will play Mills, and Stallone will play his father-in-law.’

It’s a subject close to Stallone’s heart, as he is keen to highlight the difficulties faced by those returning from military conflict, whether they have been physically injured or not. It’s not clear when the film might starts shooting.

Silence Trailer – Plus a poster for Martin Scorsese’s drama starring Andrew Garfield & Liam Neeson

November 23, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

silence-poster-slideMartin Scorsese has been attached to Silence for years. However he kept putting it back, to the point where it briefly ended up in court as some of the backers felt he was essentially preventing it from actually getting made by never getting round to making it, but keeping himself attached to helm.

That was sorted out and Scorsese has now filmed the movie, based on Shusaku Endo’s novel. Set in the 17th Century, the story follows Father Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield), a Portuguese Jesuit priest who travels to Japan to confront his mentor, after rumours surface that he has abandoned the church. Ken Watanabe will portray Father Rodrigues’ Japanese interpreter, while Liam Neeson,Issei Ogata and Adam Driver also star.

The movie is getting an Oscar-qualifying run in the US in December, before expanding in January. It’ll be out in the UK early next year. [Read more…]
