Rian Johnson Is Planning A Brand New Star Wars Trilogy

November 11, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Lucasfilm and Disney must really like what Rian Johnson has been doing with Star Wars: The Last Jedi. They’ve announced that the director is now working on a whole new trilogy of movie set in a galaxy far, far away, which will be ‘separate from the episodic Skywalker saga’, according to the official release.

“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

However, there’s very little information about the films or what they will be about. All of the Star Wars movies announced so far have been tied to the main saga, either continuing the Skywalker story or showing us more about people and events we’ve known about previously.

This time though, it seems we’re really getting something new, as the trilogy will ‘introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.’

“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”

It’s not know yet when we will see the first of these film. The Last Jedi is out in December, followed by a film about a young Han Solo in May 2018.

New Star Wars: The Last Jedi Trailer – Rey, Finn, Poe, Leia & Luke are striking back

October 10, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

We hadn’t heard about this film before, so we figure it needs every little bit of help it can get. I expect you’ll only be able to find it in tiny little art cinemas though when it’s released in December.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.

‘The film stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern and Benicio Del Toro. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is written and directed by Rian Johnson and produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman. J.J. Abrams, Tom Karnowski and Jason McGatlin are the executive producers.’

The Last Jedi will be in cinemas on December 14th. [Read more…]

Will Laura Dern’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi Character Be LGBTQ?

September 5, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Shortly following the release of The Force Awakens, a lot of people got excited about the idea that Finn (John Boyega) and Poe (Oscar Isaac) were more than just friends. While the actors and filmmakers both flirted with the idea and denied it, it did appear to that the reaction to the possibility of Poe and Finn getting together made Lucasfilm start thinking more seriously about including LGBTQ characters in the movies.

Now we may have one in Star Wars: The Last Jedi – although we’ll have to wait and see whether the character’s sexuality actually makes it into the film. Screenrant reports that in Claudia Gray‘s new novel, Leia: Princess of Alderaan, which looks at events during Leia’s life before the first Star Wars (1977) movie, the character of Amilyn Holdo is presented as possibly pansexual.

While the book includes a young Holdo, we will get to see an older version of the character in The Last Jedi – who by that time is an Admiral – played by Laura Dern.

Here’s a brief passage from Leia: Princess of Alderaan: “A pair of pretty dark eyes.” Then Amilyn thought about that for a moment. “Or more than a pair, if you’re into Grans. Or Aqualish, or Talz. Or even – ”

“That’s all right! Leia said through laughter. “It’s just humanoid males for me.”

“Really? That feels so limiting.”

“Thank goodness it’s a big galaxy.”

Now, it is a bit of a leap from that exchange to say that Holdo is definitely LGBTQ, or that if she is there will be any direct evidence of it in the movies, but it’s makes it a distinct possiblity. The fact Amilyn is such a big part of the novel and of Leia’s earlier life also suggests she may become increasingly important to the Star Wars movies, especially considering Carrie Fisher’s sad death. We will be able to see how Holdo fits into The Last Jedi and whether her sexuality is evident when the film is released in December.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Behind The Scenes Look – Get your latest fix from a galaxy far, far away

July 16, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With Disney busy showing off its wares at the D23 Expo at Disneyland, one of the big things they’re hawking is, of course, Star Wars: The Last Jedi. To help get us excited for the next adventures of Rey, Finn, Poe, Luke Skywalker and co., a new behind-the scenes look has been released.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Trailer – Rey, Finn, Poe, Leia & Luke are striking back

April 14, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you were hoping for the first trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi to give you a full rundown of the plot, you’ll be disappointed. Instead – and as most expected – it’s more about teasing the movie and getting people excited. Plot-wise, all we learn is the Rey will be practicing her Jedi skills and that the bad guys think the Jedi should end.

Nothing too surprising there then!

It does all look pretty cool though, with the return of Finn, Poe and Rey, as well as a glimpse of Leia and the voice of Luke Skywalker. There’s also plenty of drama, Kylo Ren looking suitable evil, and som spaceship action.

Take a look at the first trailer and poster below. [Read more…]

Star Wars: Episode VIII Gets Its Official Title

January 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It seems like JJ Abrams has initiated a new tradition with the fact he held off letting the world know that his Star Wars movie would be called The Force Awakens until long after production wrapped and speculation about the title had reached breaking point. Rian Johnson has followed a similar path, only now revealing that Star Wars: Episode VIII will be subtitled The Last Jedi.

That will inevitably lead to plenty of speculation about how that fits into the plot, although the most logical inference is that this means the movie more heavily leans on Luke Skywalker. However as technically Luke was never a full Jedi, there’s always a chance another Jedi Knight has survived somewhere who we’ll be introduced in the sequel (and of course that also leaves room for a few force ghosts too). Some have also speculated that it does refer to Luke, but that the fact he’s the ‘last’ means that Rey’s future is in something different that the old order of Jedi and Sith.

Daisy Ridley, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie and Andy Serkis star, with a December release date set. Hopefully it won’t be too long until we get a trailer! [Read more…]

Looper (Blu-ray)

January 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Jeff Daniels, Paul Dano
Director: Rian Johnson
Running Time: 119 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 28th 2013

Time travel is a tough nut to crack. It’s an idea that’s full of possibilities but it also has major pitfalls, not least of which are the endless paradoxes and logic knots that time travel films can tie themselves up in. Although Looper doesn’t completely resolve these problems, its gets closer than any film since Twelve Monkeys and presents a reality that’s actually pretty close to how some quantum physicists think time travel could actually work.

Indeed as Twelve Monkeys and Looper both feature Bruce Willis, perhaps all prospective time travel movies need to be given the Brucey seal of approval before they go into production. [Read more…]

New Looper US Trailer Hits

June 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Just yesterday we posted a new UK trailer for Looper, and now a fresh US one has arrived, giving a different and yet still very exicting look a the time-travel movie. In the film Joe (Jospeh Gordon Levitt) works as a looper, a futuristic assassin who receives and eliminates targets sent back in time by a criminal organisation. The only rule is that you do not let your target escape – even if that target is you. Looper stars Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon Levitt and Emily Blunt and is released on September 28.

Looper Trailer – Loads more plot in the UK promo for the Gordon-Levitt & Willis flick

June 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While we had a trailer for Looper a few weeks ago, it was a bit light on plot. However that’s been remedied with the new UK promo, which gives a much better sense of Rian Johnson’s time travel move. Joe (Jospeh Gordon Levitt) works as a looper, a futuristic assassin who receives and eliminates targets sent back in time by a criminal organisation. The only rule is that you do not let your target escape – even if that target is you. Looper stars Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon Levitt and Emily Blunt and is released on September 28.

Looper Trailer – Joseph Gordon-Levitt needs to kill his future self!

April 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I think it’s fair to say the quandary Joseph Gordon-Levitt faces in Looper is one few people have had to deal with – what if you job was to kill people sent to you from the future (so there’s no evidence of the crime), but you’re suddenly sent your own future self (Bruce Sillis) to murder? Hmm, toughy. That’s the basic set-up of Looper, which promises to be a truly intriguing pic, reteaming Gordon-Levitt with Brick helmer Rian Johnson. After a few days of teases, the trailer is finally here! The film’s due in cinemas on September 28th.
