It seems Arnold Schwarzenegger would like to ensure his position on gay marriage is clear as mud, as he’s told CBS News that he married two gay couples while he was Governor Of California, but he doesn’t go as far as to publicly say he supports gay marriage. So why marry people, then?
The first wedding he performed was for his former chief of staff, Susan Kennedy, whom he once dubbed a ‘cigar smoking lesbian’. “I performed the wedding in the office,” said Arnie after being asked if he attended the Wedding, “I married her in the office, in the Governor’s office.”
The second marriage was for assistant in the Governor’s office. Oddly though while he won’t go as far as to say he openly supports gay marriage, he does say, “I’m for that she [Kennedy] gets the kind of wedding and the kind of ceremony that I had when I got married with Maria [Shriver]. That she happens to love a woman, and I am a guy that loves a woman, that is two different things. It doesn’t make any difference. She should still have her ceremony.” So where exactly does he stand? We’re not sure.
When in office Schwarzenegger vetoed two bills that would have legalised same-sex marriage in California. Now it appears that may have been more about party politics than his own personal beliefs (it’s notable the gay marriages he performed were kept secret, as they may have been unpopular with many Republican voters).
Indeed Arnie doesn’t seem sure of much at the moment, as despite being a Republican Governor, he hasn’t decided whether to vote for Mitt Romney or his Democrat opponent Barack Obama. Even so he has no intention of leaving the Republican Party. Indeed it seems Arnie is increasingly what’s being termed a RINO – Republican In Name Only – a name given to the more socially liberal branch of the party who don’t like the hard line its taken in recent years.
