It turns out even Spider-man is on the side of marriage equality, as in a new interview with The Times (via Gay Star News), Andrew Garfield has said he’s most definitely on the side of equal rights for all.
He says, “Of course I’m in favor of marriage equality. Same-sex couples should have the same rights as anybody else. There is no argument against equality. How can anyone argue against compassion and understanding?”
Garfield has previously played gay characters, including in a 2006 production of Beautiful Thing, Jonathan Harvey’s play about the romance between two teens boys on a downtrodden South London housing estate.
Talking about the play, Garfield says, “The simplicity of it is that it’s a profound, beautiful story of how love can transform you – gay, straight, bi, lesbian, whoever.”
A 20th anniversary adaptation of Beautiful Thing is currently playing at The Arts Theatre in London until May 25th.
