Black Nativity has sounded interested even since it was announced that the Langston Hughes’s classic 1961 musical was finally going to be made. Now the first trailer has been released and it looks even more intriguing.
It’s about a Baltimore teenage boy who is sent to Harlem to spend Christmas with the grandparents he never met. Through his grandfather’s Christmas Eve sermon and a stylised, dream-sequence retelling of the classic Nativity story, he learns about the importance of faith and family.
Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Jennifer Hudson, Tyrese Gibson and Mary J. Blige star, with Kasi Lemmons directing. Unsurprisingly the film will be out at Christmas.
