It’s amazing that its 20 years since Philadelphia and won Tom Hanks an Oscar for playing HIV+ lawyer, Andrew Beckett. To mark the anniversary, the films screenwriter, Ron Nyswaner, director Jonathan Demme and several cast members with take part in ‘Philadelphia Twenty Years Later: Narrative and the Epidemic’ at Columbia University Medical Center on November 12th.
Ahead of that, Nyswaner has been talking to NewNowNext about the movie, how it got made and the bedroom scene that didn’t make it into the final movie. It’s also revealed that Hanks wasn’t the first choice for the lead role, as Daniel Day Lewis actually passed on the part.
Looking back on Philadelphia, it’s amazing how things have changed in 20 years, not least that at the time having a major star playing gay was incredibly unusual, while now it’s pretty much seen as a right of passage for every actor.
