Ever since the success of The Avengers, other studios have been eyeing Marvel’s film universe with jealous eyes. DC/Warner has stepped up plans to build its own interconnected universe, Fox is expanding X-Men and Fantastic Four, and now it appears Sony wants to build its own interconnected superhero/villain world with the Spider-man characters it has the rights to, according to Deadline.
The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4 are already in the works, and now studio president Amy Pascal has teased that they are planning numerous spin-offs to go along with the sequels. During a presentation to investors she said, “We are going to access Marvel’s full world of Spider-Man characters, so be on the lookout for new heroes and villains.”
Sony Pictures Entertainment chief Michael Lynton suggested that there are currently scripts in development for these spin-offs saying, “We do very much have the ambition about creating a bigger universe around Spider-Man. There are a number of scripts in the works.”
While it hasn’t been confirmed which characters will get their own stand-alone movies, Sony’s licensing deal with Marvel allows it to make movies based on the peripheral characters in this universe, such as Venom and Black Cat. There are also plenty of villains who could become central to spin-offs, and it’s already believed The Amazing Spider-man movies will lead to the formation of the evil Sinister Six band of bad guys.
