Rosaline feels like it’s been in development for a long time, but it’s now moved a step closer to the screen with the news that Felicity Jones is in early talks to join Universal’s upcoming comedic take on Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet, called Rosaline.
The movie is set in the period of the play but uses modern language. It is being told from the viewpoint of Rosaline, Romeo’s first flame. She doesn’t actually appear in Shakespeare’s play, but is mentioned as someone Romeo was besotted with but she gets completely forgotten when he meets Juliet. The project is based on a novel by Rebecca Serle, called When You Were Mine.
Alex Timbers is directing from a script by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. An earlier verison of the movie had Michael Sucsy attached to direct, with Lily Collins, Deborah Ann Woll, Dave Franco and Allison Williams set to star. It’s not known if any of them are still involved.
