In March 2014 Sofia Coppola signed up to direct a new, live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid for Universal and Working Title. She has since moved on but the film is alive and well, with Variety reporting that Chloe Moretz will play the title role, and Richard Curtis (Four Wedding, Love Actually) will write the script.
Not much is known about the specifics of this new take on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic story, other than the bare bones of it following a mermaid who wishes to become human after falling in love with a man she saved from drowning.
The film currently has no director, and it’s believed that Universal plans to wait until Curtis has finished his pass at the screenplay before they bring one in. As a result it’s not clear when it will shoot or when it will arrive in cinemas.
