John Boyega Shoots Down Star Wars Gay Romance Theories

Ever since Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit cinemas, a lot of people have wondered whether there was more to the relationship between Finn (John Boyega) and Poe (Oscar Isaac)  than just friendship – particularly one scene where they run towards each, which many have commented looked like they would end up kissing.

Since then the rumours have intensified, stoked by a comment Oscar Isaac (perhaps jokingly) made where he said he was playing the relationship between the two of them for romance. That’s led to speculation that in the coming movies it will develop into a real queer romance (despite pretty scant evidence that’s what’s planned).

However it looks like that isn’t where things are headed, and indeed that isn’t officially what’s going on in The Force Awakens – although perhaps it was for one of the actors. It’s John Boyega who’s shooting down the rumours, resulting in a Tweet from Shortlist’s Chris Mandle which reads ‘Sad news: John Boyega confirmed to me the Finn/Poe romance is not canon and it only exists “in Oscar’s head” :(‘

To be honest, it was always unlikely Disney was planning to make two of the main characters in Star Wars queer, at least in a way that was more than subtext. However to give you a little hope, it’s unlikely Boyega has seen the scripts for Episodes VIII and IX, so there’s always a chance the House Of Mouse has a secret up its sleeve – but don’t hold out too much hope.

Sad news: John Boyega confirmed to me the Finn/Poe romance is not canon and it only exists "in Oscar's head" 🙁
