Synopsis: ‘Veteran lesbian police detective Viola Ames (Melanie Brockmann Gaffney) is assigned to investigate the case of a missing woman who uncovered a murder plot set in the theatre world, behind the scenes of a play called The Russian Doll. As the play moves towards opening night, Viola and her police partner uncover a complicated and enigmatic series of twists and turns to uncover the identity of the kidnapper as well as a surprising murder suspect. At the same time that Viola deciphers clues to solve the case, Viola’s tough and emotionally closed world begins to change as she falls for a new woman in her life, Faith.
‘Russian Doll was made by a talented and committed family of LGBT filmmakers and allies. Inspired by their son Jason’s journey as an openly gay theatre and film actor, parents and filmmakers Ed Gaffney and Suzanne Brockmann committed themselves as artists to creating fully realized portrayals of LGBT characters on the big screen. The film was written and directed by filmmaker Ed Gaffney, who is also a veteran LGBT activist, and and executive produced by his wife Suzanne Brockmann (New York Times bestselling author of more than fifty books) and their son, actor / filmmaker Jason T. Gaffney. The film also stars Ed and Suzanne’s daughter, actress Melanie Brockmann Gaffney. Russian Doll is the family’s second LGBT feature film, after the award-winning rom-com The Perfect Wedding (2013).’
Wolfe Releasing is bringing out the film on DVD and VoD on April 17th in the US. Take a look at the trailer below.
