Dragon Wasps (DVD)

September 12, 2012 By Stephen Sclater Leave a Comment

Starring: Corin Nemec, Dominika Juillet, Benjamin Easterday
Director: Joe Knee
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 17th 2012

The title pretty much says it all, so if you think along lines of Mega Shark etc, that is what u will get. This is by no means Predator meets Eight Legged Freaks (or even Piranha 3DD for that matter) as the quick sell states, it’s more likely to be seen in Kim Newman’s Video Dungeon than anywhere else.

What do you need to know about the film? Well, if you are curious about it, I’m sure you know what you are going to get, a reasonably low budget horror film, with wooden acting, poor dialogue, a couple of very attractive women running around in skimpy outfits, and a decent body body count. Simples!

The film is set in the Belize rainforest. Gina Humphries is a very attractive entomologist and she and her equally attractive assistant Rhonda are searching for her father who has been missing for a few days. With the help of some soldiers they go in search of her father, and unfortunately come across a guerrilla military force as well as the dragon wasps themselves. What ensues is a battle of survival against the dragon wasps and the outsmarting of the jungle Guerillas, led by a one eyed patois speaking Jaguar.

The best thing about the film is the setting in the stunning Belize jungle. Sweeping landscapes, waterfalls and dense jungles are used to great effect. However the clunkily delivered dialogue from the scientists explaining the genetically modified wasps is often embarrassing to the ear, as if  it was written by an overly smart 12 year old who has been given access to a genetic thesaurus.

Overall Verdict: For the non-concerning horror aficionado, perhaps the mix of Sci-Fi TV actors, the ‘voodoo magic’ and the venom spitting fire breathing wasps may be enough to satisfy your needs. But not for me.
