In a move that’s surprised many, it’s been revealed that Ben Affleck has signed up to play Bruce Wayne/Batman in the as yet untitled, Man Of Steel 2. This will be an entirely new incarnation of the character rather than following on from the Christopher Nolan films and will bring Batman and Superman together for the first time on the big screen
Ben Affleck will star opposite Henry Cavill, who will reprise the role of Superman/Clark Kent. The film will also reunite Man of Steel stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.
Director Zack Snyder commented,”Ben Affleck provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry Cavill’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.”
Affleck recently starred in the Academy Award Best Picture winning Argo, which he also directed and produced. However he hasn’t had a huge amount of luck in big, tentpole movies such as The Sum Of All Fears and his last superhero adventure, Daredevil. However he’s been okay when part of an ensemble, such as in Armageddon, so perhaps he’ll be alright here.
There are already many wondering if he’s the right choice for Batman, but that’s probably how it should be, as from Michael Keaton onward there’s been a history of fans wondering whether someone was right for the role.
Man Of Steel 2 is being scripted by David S. Goyer from a story he co-created with Zack Snyder. Filming is expected to begin in 2014, with a July 17, 2015 release date already set.
