Justice League (Blu-ray Review) – The superhero team-up we’ve all been waiting for?

March 24, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher
Director: Zack Snyder
Running Time: 120 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: March 26th 2018 (UK)

Poor old Justice League. It’s a superhero team-up that fans have been waiting for decades for. When it was announced a couple of years ago it immediately sounded like it would be the biggest movie of 2018. However, following the lacklustre reception to the Warner/DC movies that led up to it (Wonder Woman excepted) and production problems including director Zack Snyder leaving due to personal problems and replacement Joss Whedon extensively retooling the movie only months before release, it certainly didn’t bode well. It also felt like Warner Bros. had slightly given up on it, or at least they failed to generate the sort of hype the movie needed, with a weak marketing campaign and little sense that this is what we’d all been waiting for.

As a result, it’s ended up as the lowest grossing of all the DCEU movies, behind even Suicide Squad. [Read more…]

New Justice League Trailer – Heroes unite and we finally get a look at the villain

October 28, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although there hasn’t been as much hype for Justice League as we might have expected, the movie is still tracking for a $100+ million opening weekend in the US, when it arrives in cinemas on November 17th. Much of the marketing so far has concentrated on bringing together the heroes – Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash – without giving us much info on why they felt the need to get together.

Now a new, fairly short trailer has arrived, which gives us a little more and a look at the main bad guy, Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds). He’s an integalactic bad guy who brings his parademons to search Earth for something he wants, and he doesn’t mind if the planet is destroyed in the process.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.’

Justice League Trailer – Earth is under attack and needs some new heroes

October 8, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When DC announced its plans for a movie universe, the centrepiece was Justive League. However, with only Wonder Woman getting a decent critical reaction in the run-up to the superhero team-up, enthusiasm for the film has been somewhat dampened. That’s not been helped by the fact that a family situation cause director Zack Snyder to leave the film, with Joss Whedon stepping in to resoot a large chunk of the movie and finish it off.

Now we’re only a few weeks until the film is due to be released, and a new trailer has been released.

Justice League Extended Trailer – Batman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg & Flash unite

July 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Following the critical and commercial success of Wonder Woman, many are hoping that the DC universe has taken a turn for the better, and that it will continue with this autumn’s much-anticipated Justice League. It’s certainly noticeable in this extended trailer, that Wonder Woman is pused to the fore.

Of course, there’s also Batman (Ben Affleck), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), Flash (Ezra Miller) and maybe even Superman (Henry Cavill), despite what happened in Batman vs. Superman.

Crush Of The Day: See How Cute Henry Cavill Looked During His Superman Screentest

April 8, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s easy to forget that only four years ago, Henry Cavill was just a guy who’d played supporting roles in The Tudors and Immortals, and whose first major lead role – opposite Bruce Willis in the underwhelming The Cold Light of Day – was yet to be released. However, that was the time when he was first brought in to test for the role of Superman in Man Of Steel.

Director Zack Snyder has released a pic over on Vero of Cavill during his screentest, where he wears a more Christopher Reeve looking super-suit than then one he finally ended up donning (indeed, it was a replica of Reeves’ costume). He certainly looks cute and fresh-faced. It’s also true that once he got the role, he must have spent an awful lot of time in the gym, and he’s not the super-buff figure he became for the final movie.

Snyder comments, “If you can put on that suit and pull it off that’s an awesome achievement… He walked out, and no one laughed. Other actors put that suit on, and it’s a joke, even if they’re great actors. Henry put it on, and he exuded this kind of crazy-calm confidence that just made me go ‘Wow.’ Okay: This was Superman.'”

Justice League Trailer – Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg & The Flash unite

March 25, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With all the summer blockbusters lining up for attention at the moment, it’s been easy to forget that before the end of the year, Warner/DC is releasing its major superhero mashup, Justice League. To help stake its place on the hype scare, the first official trailer for the movie has now arrived, showing us the likes of Superman, Batman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg and The Flash, and what they’ll be getting up to.

The trailer follows a series of teasers and character posters, which you can also see below.

New Justice League Pic Shows Batman, Wonder Woman & The Flash

December 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s been easy to forget that in less than a year, DC/Warner will be really upping their game with Justice League, which will bring together the likes of Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Superman, Aquaman and Cyborg. To remind us, a new pic has arrived via EW, showing the first three of those superheroes lining up.

Of course, before next November’s Justice League, Wonder Woman will be getting her own standalone movie next June, while solo movies for the other characters are already mapped between now and 2019. DC will be hoping these film are better received than than the likes of Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, which made decent amounts of cash, but haven’t been able to dent Marvel’s superiority in the critical and fanboy stakes.

The Justice League mash-up certainly has plenty of potential though. Expect it in cinemas next November.

Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice – Ultimate Edition (Blu-ray Review)

August 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg, Amy Adams
Director: Zack Snyder
Running Time: 182 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: August 1st 2016 (UK)

As they say, ‘The higher you climb, the further there is to fall’. That’s a fair description of Batman v Superman, a film that you certainly can’t fault for its ambition, but which can’t reach the heights it strives for despite its best efforts. After an exceedingly mixed reaction at cinemas, the film comes to Blu-ray in an Ultimate Edition form, which adds in an extra 30 minutes of footage and adds back in some of the violence that US censors wouldn’t permit to get it a PG-13 certificate.

Some hoped this new version would rectify all the flaws of the theatrical cut. It doesn’t do that, but it does help a little, particularly with some of the subplots where the theatrical version had bits of them, but where they either petered out or didn’t make a whole lot of sense. It does add a couple of extra problems though. [Read more…]

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (Cinema Review)

March 25, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jeremy Irons
Director: Zack Snyder
Running Time: 151 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: March 25th 2016

This film has been a long time coming and there are some great articles online chronicling the various attempts to bring Batman vs Superman and the Justice League to the silver screen. As you can tell from the subtitle, this film serves as an introduction to the Justice League films coming in 2017 and 2019, and the continuation of the DCCU (Detective Comics Cinematic Universe) which began with Man of Steel in 2013.

But in a film that is two and a half hours long I was concerned that they would rush the introduction to a wealth of new characters and backstories when it should just focus on the leads. Too many cooks and all.

DC and Warner Brothers are reaching for the financial success that Marvel has had with their cinematic universe (MCU), but the tone of their films set the studios apart. Marvel films are more light-hearted whereas DC’s recent films have mainly been darker (excluding the Schumacher Batman movies). Despite the darker tone I enjoyed Man of Steel up until the finale, where it seemed like the production had $100 million left and spent it needlessly destroying Metropolis. But it didn’t feel like a Superman movie and lacked the charm of Richard Donner’s 1978 version. [Read more…]

J.K. Simmons Joins Justice League As Commissioner Gordon

March 8, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It looks like Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons is swapping teams, as after playing Daily Planet editor J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-man movies, he’s hopping across to the DC stable to play Commissioner Gordon in the Justice League movies, according to THR.

There’s not too much info on how the policeman will figure into the plot of the movie, but Simmons will join the likes of Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), the Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher), and his presence also suggest Gotham City will feature in the movie. The role will see the actor head to the Justice League: Part One set in mid-April, shortly after the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice.

Zack Snyder is directing the movie, which is due for release in November 2017, with Justice League: Part Two pencilled in for July 2019. It’s not known is Simmons is likely to be seen in any of the other planned DC movies.
