Matt Damon’s poorly thought out comments about gay actors are still eliciting comment. He caused controversy after he said in an interview, “Whether you’re straight or gay, people shouldn’t know anything about your sexuality because that’s one of the mysteries that you should be able to play.”
Although he clarified his comments, many felt he’d missed the point, as he seemed to fail to grasp that ackowledging your sexuality is something straight actors do as a matter of course, and that simply saying you’re gay isn’t revealing something that’s drastically different that should make any difference to what you should be able to play.
Ellen Page seems to agree with that assessment, telling Metro Weekly, “He doesn’t have a point because he related it to sexuality. Heterosexual actors and actresses do not have to go to great lengths to hide their sexuality. Yes, of course, keep your private life private. Protect yourself. Have boundaries. When you’re a public person, you need to think about your safety. But if it’s in relation to sexuality, then no — that’s an unfair double standard. Heterosexual people walk down the red carpet with their partners all the time, they talk about their children…”
However she does acknowledge it’s more difficult for gay actors currently, as if they take a same-sex partner it becomes ‘a thing’. She adds though, “I think that will change. And it’s going to continue to change the more people come out.”
