Ellen Page Joins Laura Linney & Olympia Dukakis In Netflix’s Tales Of The City Revival

April 24, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last summer it was revealed that Netflix was hoping to revive Armistead Maupin’s Tales Of The City with original cast members Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis. Now a new 10-part Tales Of The City mini-series has officially been announced, which does indeed have both Linney and Dukakis attached, and Ellen Page have been announced to join them.

Based on Maupin’s novels and stories, Tales Of The City was first turned into a six-part limited series in 1992. That spawned two follow-ups, More Tales of the City in 1998, and Further Tales of the City in 2001. They have become iconic slices on LGBT entertainment, following gay, straight and trans characters in San Francisco, living and connected to Anna Madrigal’s legendary house at 28 Barbary Lane.

Netflix’s official release says of the new series, ‘Based on the books by Armistead Maupin, this next chapter – Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City – follows Mary Ann (Laura Linney), who returns home to San Francisco and is reunited with her daughter (Ellen Page) and ex-husband Brian, twenty years after leaving them behind to pursue her career. Fleeing the midlife crisis that her picture-perfect Connecticut life created, Mary Ann returns home to her chosen family and will quickly be drawn back into the orbit of Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis) and the residents of 28 Barbary Lane.

‘Academy Award nominee and Emmy-, SAG- and Golden Globe-Award winning actress Laura Linney and Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Olympia Dukakis will reprise their roles as Mary Ann Singleton and Anna Madrigal. Barbara Garrick also to return. Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG Award nominee Ellen Page will join the cast as Shawna.’

“I couldn’t be more excited about this new brand-new incarnation of Tales. It’s set in present-day San Francisco with all the joys and complications that might suggest for the residents of 28 Barbary Lane,’ comments Armistead Maupin. “Mrs. Madrigal’s tenants, both old and new, will be entangled in delicious new adventures and ever-expanding possibilities for love.”

“The magical, vivid world that Armistead Maupin built in Tales of the City is one that offered so many – particularly the LGBTQ+ community – a home for the first time. For many, Tales was the first time they saw themselves on screen,” said writer and showrunner Lauren Morelli. “I am humbled to now find my own home within Tales and to continue telling Armistead’s stories.”

BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival Announces Its Opening & Closing Films

February 15, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Postcards From London

The full programme for BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival is due to be announced soon, but ahead of that, the British Film Institute has announced the opening and closing films of the fest, which runs 21st March to 1st April at BFI Southbank. The UK’s premiere lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender film fest will open with Tali Shalom-Ezer’s My Days Of Mercy on Wednesday 21st March. Powered by stirring performances from Ellen Page (Juno, Inception, Freeheld) and Kate Mara (House Of Cards, The Martian), Shalom-Ezer’s follow up to Princess is a poignant love story between two women from vastly different backgrounds and opposing political views.

The European Premiere of Steve McLean’s stylish and sexy Postcards From London will feature as the Closing Night Gala. The film tells the story of beautiful teenager Jim (Beach Rats breakout star, Harris Dickinson) who, having travelled from the suburbs, finds himself in Soho where he falls in with a gang of unusual high class male escorts ‘The Raconteurs’. Set in a vibrant, neon-lit, imaginary vision of Soho, this morality tale manages to be both a beautifully shot homage to the spirit of Derek Jarman and a celebration of the homo-erotic in Baroque art.

Michael Blyth, BFI Flare’s Senior Programmer comments, “It’s a pleasure to open this year’s Festival with My Days of Mercy, Tali Shalom-Ezer’s politically resonant and emotionally astute drama. This is bold and provocative filmmaking, featuring captivating performances from both Kate Mara and Ellen Page, the latter of whom continues to show such inspiring commitment to telling LGBT stories on screen”.

Tricia Tuttle, Artistic Director, BFI Festivals adds, “In recent years, the Festival has been developing links between the established film industry and the UK’s very exciting new generation of emerging LGBT identified filmmakers. We’re seeing a true strength in depth of talent in the UK and it’s a real thrill to see this in action with our Closing Night film, Steve McLean’s stylish and witty Postcards from London, a love song to European queer art and culture.”

BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival is the UK’s longest running LGBT film event. It began in 1986 as Gay’s Own Pictures. By its 3rd edition it was known as the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and since then has grown to become the largest LGBT film event in the UK, and its most anticipated. The Festival changed its name to BFI Flare in 2014 to reflect the increasing diversity of its films, filmmakers and audience. The festival is programmed by Jay Bernard, Michael Blyth, Zorian Clayton, Brian Robinson and Emma Smart, led by Artistic Director, Tricia Tuttle.

The full programme of BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival will include 56 feature films, an expanded industry programme, selected films on BFI Player VOD service, a series of special events and archive screenings. fiveFilms4freedom will see Flare offer five LGBT short films for free across the world and promoted through the British Council’s global networks. The full programme will be available on 21st February. The festival runs 21st March – 1st April. You can find more information at: www.bfi.org.uk/Flare

The Cured Trailer – Ellen Page has to help out some rehabilitated zombies

January 28, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s almost incredible how many different things filmmakers have found to do with zombies, with the living dead featuring in everything from straightforward horror movies to rom-coms. The Cured gives things a twist by focussing on what might happen if zombies could be treated and cured, and then have to reintegrate into normal society, despite their past as brain-eating ghouls.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘What happens when the undead return to life? In a world ravaged for years by a virus that turns the infected into zombie-like cannibals, a cure is at last found and the wrenching process of reintegrating the survivors back into society begins. Among the formerly afflicted is Senan (Sam Keeley), a young man haunted by the horrific acts he committed while infected. Welcomed back into the family of his widowed sister-in-law (Ellen Page), Senan attempts to restart his life—but is society ready to forgive him and those like him? Or will fear and prejudice once again tear the world apart? Pulsing with provocative parallels to our troubled times, The Cured is a smart, scary, and hauntingly human tale of guilt and redemption.’

The film is due out in the US on February 23rd. No UK date is currently set. [Read more…]

January 4, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Juno, X-Men and Inception star Ellen Page is a married woman! The out and proud actress announced via social media that she’d tied the knot with her girlfriend – now wife – Emma Portner.

Alongside images of the couple of their hands complete with wedding rings, Page wrote on Instagram, ‘Can’t believe I get to call this extraordinary woman my wife. @emmaportner’.

No information has been released about the ceremony or when they swapped vows. That’s in keeping with a relationship where they’ve never hidden they were together, but haven’t gone out of their way to court publicity either. They have been seen together in public on various occassions though, such as at the premiere of Page’s film, Flatliners.

Portner is a New York based dancer and choreographer, who teaches at the Broadway Dance Center.

Congratulations to both of them! [Read more…]

Ellen Page Calls Out Director Brett Ratner For Homophobia & Harassment On The X-Men Set

November 11, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

One of the major figures accused of sexual harassment and assualt in Hollywood in the last couple of weeks in Rush Hour and Red Dragon director Brett Ratner. He has been accused by numerous women, including Natasha Henstridge and Olivia Munn, of terrible behaviour. Now Ellen Page has joined them, saying he was ‘homophobic and abusive behavior’ on the X-Men: The Last Stand set.

She says in a powerful, lengthy post on Facebook, ‘“You should fuck her to make her realize she’s gay.” He said this about me during a cast and crew “meet and greet” before we began filming, X Men: The Last Stand. I was eighteen years old. He looked at a woman standing next to me, ten years my senior, pointed to me and said: “You should fuck her to make her realize she’s gay.” He was the film’s director, Brett Ratner.

‘I was a young adult who had not yet come out to myself. I knew I was gay, but did not know, so to speak. I felt violated when this happened. I looked down at my feet, didn’t say a word and watched as no one else did either. This man, who had cast me in the film, started our months of filming at a work event with this horrific, unchallenged plea. He “outed” me with no regard for my well-being, an act we all recognize as homophobic. I proceeded to watch him on set say degrading things to women. I remember a woman walking by the monitor as he made a comment about her “flappy pussy”.

‘We are all entitled to come into an awareness of our sexual orientation privately and on our own terms. I was young and although already a working actor for so long I had in many ways been insulated, growing up on film sets instead of surrounded by my peers. This public, aggressive outing left me with long standing feelings of shame, one of the most destructive results of homophobia. Making someone feel ashamed of who they are is a cruel manipulation, designed to oppress and repress. I was robbed of more than autonomy over my ability to define myself. Ratner’s comment replayed in my mind many times over the years as I encountered homophobia and coped with feelings of reluctance and uncertainty about the industry and my future in it. The difference is that I can now assert myself and use my voice to to fight back against the insidious queer and transphobic attitude in Hollywood and beyond. Hopefully having the position I have, I can help people who may be struggling to be accepted and allowed to be who they are –to thrive. Vulnerable young people without my advantages are so often diminished and made to feel they have no options for living the life they were meant to joyously lead.

‘I got into an altercation with Brett at a certain point. He was pressuring me, in front of many people, to don a t-shirt with “Team Ratner” on it. I said no and he insisted. I responded, “I am not on your team.” Later in the day, producers of the film came to my trailer to say that I “couldn’t talk like that to him.” I was being reprimanded, yet he was not being punished nor fired for the blatantly homophobic and abusive behavior we all witnessed. I was an actor that no one knew. I was eighteen and had no tools to know how to handle the situation.’

Page also recounts other situations where she has been put into compromising positions, including powerful men taking her to dinner when she was young and then propositioning her. She also adds, ‘I did a Woody Allen movie and it is the biggest regret of my career. I am ashamed I did this. I had yet to find my voice and was not who I am now and felt pressured, because “of course you have to say yes to this Woody Allen film.” Ultimately, however, it is my choice what films I decide to do and I made the wrong choice. I made an awful mistake.’

You can read Page’s full, powerful essay here.

Since she posted her message, many of her colleagues and co-stars have stepped up to support her, including fellow X-Men alumnus Anna Paquin, who tweeted, ‘I was there when that comment was made. I stand with you [email protected]’

Ratner has denied (via his lawyer) earlier accusations of innapropriate sexual behaviour, but has so far had no response to Page’s accusations. Since the allegations first came to life, he has lost numerous jobs and essentially been fired by Warner Bros, where he had development and financing deals, and where his offices were based. Ellen Page & Kate Mara To Star In Lesbian-Themed Romantic Drama Mercy

August 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ellen-pageIn a few weeks a new lesbian-themed movie is due to start shooting in Cincinnnati, which has gathered together a great cast including Ellen Page, Kate Mara, Amy Seimetz, Pablo Schreiber and Elias Koteas. Israeli filmmaker Tali Shalom Ezer (Princess) will direct.

In the movie, ‘Page is portraying Lucy, the daughter of a man on death row falling in love with Mara’s Mercy character, a woman on the opposing side of her family’s political cause. As a result, Lucy’s value for truth is tested as her world begins to unravel.’ It’s certainly a setup with potential for plenty of drama.

Joe Barton wrote the script for the movie, which has been in the works for a while – indeed it’s believed Page has been attached for over a year. It will begin filming in September for release next year.

Ellen Page Asks, “Now I’m Gay, I Can’t Play A Straight Person?”

January 30, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ellen-page

Since coming out in February 2014, Ellen Page has taken her place as a major spokesperson for LGBT people. She recently played a lesbian in Freeheld, and she has a couple more projects in the pipeline where she’s playing gay. However, some have wondered whether that’s by necessity as by choice.

Talking to Elle she addresses the issue, saying, “Zachary Quinto is out, and he stars in one of the biggest blockbuster franchises. I have four projects coming up – all gay roles. People ask if I’m concerned about getting pigeonholed. No one asks: ‘Ellen, you’ve done seven straight roles in a row – shouldn’t you shake it up and do something queer? There’s still that double standard. I look at all the things I’ve done in movies: I’ve drugged a guy, tortured someone, become a roller-derby star overnight. But now I’m gay, I can’t play a straight person?”

She’s also been talking to The Guardian about why she felt compelled to come out, saying, “I felt, let’s just please be done with this chapter of discomfort and sadness and anxiety, and hurting my relationships, and all those things that come with it. I felt guilty for not being a visible person for the community, and for having the privilege that I had and not using it. I had got to the point where I was telling myself, you know, you should feel guilty about this. I was an active participant in an element of Hollywood that is gross. I would never judge somebody else for not coming out, but for me, personally, it did start to feel like a moral imperative.”

However she hopes that, “It’ll be amazing, the day when it’s not a thing, when an actress doesn’t feel like she needs to make a speech. That’s obviously the goal.”

Gaycation Trailer – Ellen Page travels the world exploring LGBT life in a new docu-series

January 26, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gaycation-slideOver the past few months stories and video of actress Ellen Page has been doing the rounds, showing her confronting notorious homophobes such as GOP presidential hopeful Ted Cruz. It’s all been as part of her new docu-series project, Gaycation, which sees her travelling to different parts of the world alongside best friend, Ian Daniel, to see LGBT life in numerous different countries and explore how those people are treated and the struggles many of them face.

Of the experience, Page told Buzzfeed, “I think I expected to definitely have emotional experiences, I don’t know if I would have anticipated…I don’t think you can anticipate the actual degree of what you’re going to feel. I’m a privileged person. I’m a privileged gay person. [The show] helped me understand, even more so, how much more vulnerable people are.”

“Each episode you’re learning so much,” Daniel added. “It’s these one-on-one interactions that are so rare, that you don’t have in your everyday life, so you come out of each episode expanding each time.”

Page continued, “You feel such a sadness and frustration and confusion for how much people have to struggle.  It’s so hard for me to wrap my head around why people are treated that way. And then, of course, you feel so inspired and so humbled by just how much you’ve been able to learn, how extraordinary people have been to us, how vulnerable and generous they are. That’s what you’re left with.”

Gaycation is due to premiere on Viceland, Vice’s new TV network, on Wednesday, March 2nd. To give us a taste, a trailer has been released, which you can take a look at below.
