Alyson Hannigan & Thomas Dekker Will Have Modern Love In A Gay Marriage Drama

June 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

alyson-hanniganThe gay-themed movie Modern Love has been quietly picking up a great cast, with Kate Walsh, Anthony Rapp and Jonathan Bennett all set to star, and now, with shooting underway, they’ve been joined by Alyson Hannigan, Thomas Dekker (“Nightmare on Elm Street”), Alona Tal, Sam Anderson, Lee Garlington, Mackenzie Astin and Hutchi Hancock, according to Variety.

It’s certainly a better line-up than the majority of gay-themed films get, but as this one is about the currently hot issue of gay marriage, it’s managed to attract a little bit more cash and known actors than most. It’s not known whether Hannigan will be stepping back into lesbian shoes following her famed turn as Willow in Buffy, but whatever character she’s playing, it will be great to see her.

The film ‘follows an intimate group of friends and family gathering at the home of two gay men — portrayed by Rapp and Bennett — to celebrate their nuptials. When the wedding hits a snag, the group helps the grooms to see that all marriages have their challenges.’

Those behind the movie hope it will have wide appeal, with the producers saying that writer/director Joshua Tunick’s script is about affirming the importance of the commitment of marriage for everyone – gay and straight – rather than just being about what it means from the LGBT perspective.

Filming is happening now in LA, although there’s no hint as to when we might see the movie.

Buffy’s Amber Benson Proud The Show ‘Kicked The Door Open For Gays On TV’

January 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

buffy-willow-tara1999 was a bit of a watermark year for gay representation on US television. Will & Grace was growing into a major hit (having premiered in late 1998), Jack came out on Dawson’s Creek, and in the world of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Willow (Alyson Hannigan) and Tara (Amber Benson) fell in love.

What was particularly unusual about Willow & Tara is not just that they were a same-sex couple – which was rare enough at the time – but that were shown as affectionate, sexual and affected by the same issues any couple faces, not just dealing with ‘gay issues’.

During a recent Reddit AMA, Benson talked about the pride she feels for having been part of the Buffy universe, saying “The most rewarding thing about playing Tara was that the relationship on Buffy between her and Willow helped kick open the door for more amazing LGBTQ characters on TV. We were so blessed to walk in their shoes and play those ladies. It’s one of the things I am most proud of in my life.”

Others online during the chat responded by talking about how important Tara & Willow were to them, such as one saying, “The only reason I knew it was okay to come out to my mother was because she told me how adorable she thought Willow and Tara were. She’d never said anything else for or against gay people so I had no idea before that.”

Benson added, “I feel very blessed to have played Tara on Buffy. It wasn’t about gratuitous making-out scenes. It was about two people who just happened to be of the same gender falling in love. [Joss Whedon] wrote real characters. He wasn’t trying to fill quotas. He was trying to create two people who just happened to be gay.”

American Pie: Reunion (DVD)

September 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Chris Klein, Alyson Hannigan, Thomas Ian Nicholas
Director: Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg
Running Time: 108 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 10th 2012

It’s nine years since we last caught up with the original American Pie gang. Since then we’ve had four straight-to-DVD titles that threatened to make the Pie name as dodgy as National Lampoon’s has become in the last couple of decades. However now they’ve managed to get pretty much all of the main Pie actors back, as well as most of the minor ones, with the likes of the Sherminator popping up for cameos.

While the gang have gone their separate ways, they all head back to East Great Falls for a reunion. Getting back together causes everyone to take stock of their lives and reminisce on the differences between who they’ve become and who they thought they’d be. Jim (Jason Biggs) is still married to Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) and they have a young kid together, but are having difficulty finding time to make love. [Read more…]

New American Pie: Reunion Red Band Trailer

March 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It seems an extra decade hasn’t dimmed the rudeness of the American Pie guys, with this new red band trailer suggesting their sexual shenanigans are still rampant when they get back together for a high school reunion. In one long-overdue weekend, they will discover what has changed, who hasn’t and that time and distance can’t break the bonds of friendship. It was summer 1999 when four small-town Michigan boys began a quest to lose their virginity. In the years that have passed, Jim and Michelle married while Kevin and Vicky said goodbye. Oz and Heather grew apart, but Finch still longs for Stifler’s mom. Now these lifelong friends have come home as adults, but they’re still causing havoc!

Fresh American Pie: Reunion Trailer

February 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A new trailer for American Pie: Reunion is here, keen to say that while it’s been several years since we last caught up with Jim, Oz, Stifler and co. things are very much the same and although they’ve grown up, their teenage selves still lurk inside. Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the comedy American Pie: Reunion, all the American Pie characters we met a little more than a decade ago are returning to East Great Falls for their high-school reunion. Now these lifelong friends have come home as adults to reminisce about—and get inspired by—the hormonal teens who launched a comedy legend.’ The film hits cinemas May 2nd.

American Reunion Gets A New-Old Poster

December 9, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

They’re really trading on the nostalgia angle with American Reunion, at least for the early marketing. But then, after years of dodgy straight-to-DVD sequels without any of the film’s young stars and the fact those who grew up with the Pie gang are now reashing their 30s, it makes sense since they’ve got that whole cast back together for a catch-up.

The latest poster even apes the poster for the first movie. You can see exactly what I mean by comparing the new poster above with the one below from the original. American Reunion is due out April 6th.

American Reunion Trailer

November 2, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Will Stifler’s mom get it on with Jim’s dad? That’s the question people will be asking after they watch this new trailer for American Reunion! However it also reintroduces us to all the rest of the old American Pie gang, most of whom are now all grown up and more staid than in their teen years, but that’s all likely to change when they get back together for a high school reunion. The film will be in UK cinemas April 6th, 2012.
