Hunger Games’ Amandla Stenberg Reveals That She Now Identifies As Gay

June 18, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Amandla Stenberg is part of a generation of young artists and performers who seem more comfortable talking about their sexuality than has been true for many of those older than them. The actress has previously talked about being queer, bisexual, pansexual and/or gender fluid, but now the 19-year has said that she currently identifies as gay.

The up and coming Stenberg is perhaps still best known for playing Rue in The Hunger Games movies, but also impressed many as one of the leads in last year’s teen romance, Everything Everything. She is tipped by many as a major star of the future.

Talking to Wonderland she told them, ‘Yep, I’m gay… I’m grateful for how being gay has afforded me this ability to experience and understand love and sex, and therefore life, in an expansive and infinite way. The continual process of unlearning heteronormativity and internalized homophobia can be difficult, but one of the biggest blessings lies in the magic that comes from having to understand love outside the confines of learned heterosexual roles.’

She was also keen to point out that,My sexuality is not a byproduct of my past experiences with men, who I have loved, but rather a part of myself I was born with and love deeply.’

Stenberg confirmed she saw the interview as a true coming out (in print at least), with a rainbow colured Instagram post where she wrote, ‘OUT & PROUD. So happy to say the words Yep, I’m Gay in official print. Interviewed for @wonderland by someone I stan infinitely – the fiercest garbagio pop queen @kingprincess69. Thank you to KP for providing me with such a safe space to come out. We talk about gay sobbing, first encounters with lesbian masturbation, queer icons, Toni Morrison, disillusionment as a critical step, the art I’ve been working on, and the films that I have coming out this year. Full interview on newsstands now and available online Monday.’

You can read the full interview over at Wonderland. [Read more…]

Everything, Everything Trailer – This year’s young adult tearjerker summer hit?

February 15, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s becoming a little bit a tradition that amongst the blockbuster action movies of the summer, there’s a slightly schmaltzy young adult film adaptation that’s ignored by most but becomes a sleeper hit with its intended audience. One of the film’s hoping to be this one’s breakout YA success is Everything, Everything, which has just released its first trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures comes the romantic drama “Everything, Everything,” directed by Stella Meghie and based on the bestselling book of the same name by Nicola Yoon.

‘What if you couldn’t touch anything in the outside world? Never breathe in the fresh air, feel the sun warm your face…or kiss the boy next door? “Everything, Everything” tells the unlikely love story of Maddy, a smart, curious and imaginative 18-year-old who due to an illness cannot leave the protection of the hermetically sealed environment within her house, and Olly, the boy next door who won’t let that stop them.

‘Maddy is desperate to experience the much more stimulating outside world, and the promise of her first romance. Gazing through windows and talking only through texts, she and Olly form a deep bond that leads them to risk everything to be together…even if it means losing everything.

‘“Everything, Everything” stars Amandla Stenberg (“The Hunger Games”) as Maddy and Nick Robinson (“Jurassic World”) as Olly. The film also stars Ana de la Reguera (“Sun Belt Express”) and Anika Noni Rose (“Dreamgirls”).’

Take a look at the trailer below. The film will be in cinemas this summer. [Read more…]

Hunger Games Actress Amandla Stenberg Reveals That She Is Bisexual

January 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

amandla-stenbergIt’s not too many year ago when the idea of coming out at the beginning of your acting career would have been seen as almost inevitably career killing. However now more and more young actors are feeling the ability to be open about their sexuality, and that includes Amandla Stenberg, who revealed she is Bisexual during a Snapchat takeover for Teen Vogue.

Stenberg is perhaps best known for playing the pivotal Rue in The Hunger Games, and has also been seen in the likes of Colobiana, Sleepy Hollow and most recently Mr Robinson. At the end of the Snapchat session, Stenberg said, “It’s a really, really hard thing to be silenced and it’s deeply bruising to fight against your identity and to mold yourself into shapes that you just shouldn’t be in.

“As someone who identifies as a black bisexual woman, I’ve been through it, and it hurts, and it’s awkward and it’s uncomfortable, but then I realized because of Solange and Ava Duvernay and Willow and all the black girls watching this right now, there is absolutely nothing to change. We cannot be suppressed. We are meant to express our joy and our love and our tears and be big and bold and definitely not easy to swallow.”

She adds that problems with diversity and representation need to be fought against, “And not just women of color. Bisexual women, gay women, transgender women, mentally ill women – I am sick of all the misogyny and homopobia and transphobia I see around me and I know you are, too.”

You can take a look at Stenberg’s comments, via her Tumblr, below. [Read more…]
