Love, Simon (Cinema Review) – Gay themed teen film fun goes mainstream

April 5, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Nick Robinson, Jennifer Garner, Josh Duhamel, Katherine Langford, Alexandra Shipp
Director: Greg Berlanti
Running Time: 110 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: April 6th 2018 (UK)

You can’t win with a gay audience. Whenever a gay-themed movie or TV show comes along that’s given a higher profile/mainstream release, it ends up generating controversy. The problem seems to be that their rarity mean people want these releases to be all things to all men (or at least reflect their personal conception of what gay entertainment should), but often course one film/show can’t represent everything.

It’s already happened with Love, Simon, with some complaining that it’s ‘yet another’ coming out story (despite the fact that coming out is one of the few nearly universal gay experiences and that the films audience of teens – and not just gay teens – won’t have seen lots of coming out movies). Others have moaned that its mainstream sensibilities deny the oppression that many LGBT people face, even though Simon’s experience is probably closer to the reality for many young gay people in the West nowadays than a ‘right on’ tale of misery and oppression. Love, Simon Actor Joey Pollari Reveals That He’s Gay

March 18, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Greg Berlanti’s gay-themed teen movie Love, Simon has received some great reviews and strong word of mouth since it opened in the US last Friday. The promotion of the film has also revealed a few interesting titbits about the cast, such as Joey Pollari revealing publicly for the first time that he is gay himself.

Pollari, who plays Lyle in the movie, is a former Disney actor who appeared in the likes of Skyrunner and Avalon High, as well MTV’s US version of The Inbetweeners. The 23-year-old spoke to The Advocate about how he came out to family and friends when he was 18, but had now decided to be open more widely.

He says of coming out, “I think all my friends and family knew on some level. I think maybe two people were shocked.”

“The only part that was difficult was me coming out to myself. And I think that is the most difficult coming-out.” He adds that “My mom knew. She laid hints for me everywhere,” and was waiting for him to come out.

While the film’s lead actor, Nick Robinson, is straight in real life, he spoke to Ellen recently about how his younger brother same out as gay during the making of Love, Simon. He told her, “I think that he had been dealing with this for a long time and this was – I think the timing was sort of coincidental but one of the best things that came out of this movie is just being able to talk to him. I think that’s the strength of a film like this is that it starts conversations, and I hope that it can do that for more people.”

New Love, Simon UK Trailer – Fresh footage from Greg Berlanti’s gay teen flick

January 24, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week we posted a new US trailer for Love, Simon, giving us a fresh look at a rare mainstream teen movie about a gay character. Now the UK trailer has been released, which features even more new footage from the film.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Everyone deserves a great love story. But for seventeen-year old Simon Spier it’s a little more complicated: he’s yet to tell his family or friends he’s gay and he doesn’t actually know the identity of the anonymous classmate he’s fallen for online. Resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying and life-changing. Directed by Greg Berlanti (Dawson’s Creek, Brothers & Sisters), written by Isaac Aptaker & Elizabeth Berger (This is Us), and based on Becky Albertalli’s acclaimed novel, LOVE, SIMON is a funny and heartfelt coming-of-age story about the thrilling ride of finding yourself and falling in love.’

The film is due in cinemas in US cinemas on March 16th, before arriving in the UK on April 8th. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

Everything, Everything Trailer – This year’s young adult tearjerker summer hit?

February 15, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s becoming a little bit a tradition that amongst the blockbuster action movies of the summer, there’s a slightly schmaltzy young adult film adaptation that’s ignored by most but becomes a sleeper hit with its intended audience. One of the film’s hoping to be this one’s breakout YA success is Everything, Everything, which has just released its first trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures comes the romantic drama “Everything, Everything,” directed by Stella Meghie and based on the bestselling book of the same name by Nicola Yoon.

‘What if you couldn’t touch anything in the outside world? Never breathe in the fresh air, feel the sun warm your face…or kiss the boy next door? “Everything, Everything” tells the unlikely love story of Maddy, a smart, curious and imaginative 18-year-old who due to an illness cannot leave the protection of the hermetically sealed environment within her house, and Olly, the boy next door who won’t let that stop them.

‘Maddy is desperate to experience the much more stimulating outside world, and the promise of her first romance. Gazing through windows and talking only through texts, she and Olly form a deep bond that leads them to risk everything to be together…even if it means losing everything.

‘“Everything, Everything” stars Amandla Stenberg (“The Hunger Games”) as Maddy and Nick Robinson (“Jurassic World”) as Olly. The film also stars Ana de la Reguera (“Sun Belt Express”) and Anika Noni Rose (“Dreamgirls”).’

Take a look at the trailer below. The film will be in cinemas this summer. [Read more…]

Logan Miller Joins Greg Berlanti’s Gay-Themed Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda

January 10, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Greg Berlanti’s planned gay-themed young adult movie, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens, continues to come together. The film already has Jurassic World’s Nick Robinson attached to star, and now he has company, with THR reporting that Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse’s Logan Miller has joined the film.

Based on Becky Albertalli’s novel, the film will follow, ‘a gay teen named Simon who has not come out to his classmates. But when an email he sent to a boy (that he’s never met) falls into the hands of class clown Martin, Simon finds himself in a complicated situation when he’s blackmailed into helping Martin get to know his best friend Abby, the new girl in school.’

Robinson will play Simon, while Miller will be his blackmailer, Martin.

Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger wrote the script for the movie, although it’s not clear when it might shoot. The likelihood is that with Berlanti still busy on his DC TV series, it will begin lensing once the latest seasons of Arrow, Flash, Legends Of Tomorrow and Supergirl have wrapped in the Spring.

Jurassic World Trailer – Chris Pratt versus the dinosaurs

November 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jurassic-world-poster1-slideWatching the trailer for Jurassic World, you get the impression that Chris Pratt is the only person who’s seen the first three movies, as like most of us he quickly realises that while dinosaurs might be trouble, that goes double for creating your own genetically modified super-predator beast.

It does look pretty cool though, with the trailer – which we’d been promised on Friday but which has appeared online early – giving us a look at the rather futuristic and fully operational dino park. As you’d expect things quickly start to go wrong.

However it would appear that this time it’s not just humans vs. dinosaurs, as the genetically modified super-beast means many of the dinos are in just as much trouble as the people. Take a look at the trailer below.

Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty Simpkins, Nick Robinson, Irrfan Khan, Vincent D’Onofrio, Jake Johnson, Omar Sy, BD Wong and Judy Greer also star. It’s due out in the UK June 12th 2015. [Read more…]
