Tag Trailer – Ed Helms, Jon Hamm & Jeremy Renner don’t want to be ‘it’

March 20, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Synopsis: ‘For one month every year, five highly competitive friends hit the ground running in a no-holds-barred game of tag they’ve been playing since the first grade — risking their necks, their jobs and their relationships to take each other down with the battle cry: “You’re It!”

‘This year, the game coincides with the wedding of their only undefeated player, which should finally make him an easy target. But he knows they’re coming… and he’s ready.

‘Based on a true story, the New Line Cinema comedy “Tag” shows how far some guys will go to be the last man standing.

‘“Tag” is directed by Jeff Tomsic (Comedy Central’s “Broad City”), with a starring ensemble cast led by Ed Helms (The “Hangover” movies, “We’re the Millers”), Jake Johnson (TV’s “New Girl”), Annabelle Wallis (“The Mummy”), Rashida Jones (TV’s “Parks and Recreation”), Isla Fisher (“Now You See Me”), Leslie Bibb (“Iron Man 2”), Hannibal Buress (“Neighbors”), with Jon Hamm (“Baby Driver,” TV’s “Mad Men”) and Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner (“The Hurt Locker, “The Town”).’

Tag is due in cinemas in July. Take a look at the first trailer before. [Read more…]

The Mummy (Blu-ray Review) – Tom Cruise is cursed (in several ways)!

October 21, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, Annabelle Wallis, Sofia Boutella, Jake Johnson
Director: Alex Kurtzman
Running Time: 110 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 23rd 2017 (UK)

While Hollywood has become increasingly obsessed with interconnected universes, Universal Pictures has felt a little left out due to the lack of comic book characters they own the rights to. To make up for it, they decided to go back to the classic movie monsters that the studio had such success with in the 1930s (indeed, they created an interconnected world of them back then). They’ve been busy attempting to build a linked series of movies around them, called Dark Universe.

The Mummy was the film designed to kick off the Dark Universe, with a big budget, an a-list star and a property everyone knows thanks to its 1990s/2000s resurrection with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. The response from critics and US audiences was muted however, with American box office stalling (although it did manage $400 million globally) and an abysmal RottenTomatoes rating (currently 16%). That’s caused a bit of a rethink about how the Dark Universe is going to pan out, with Bride Of Frankenstein pushed back, and the likes of The Invisible Man (with Johnny Depp) and The Wolfman currently without a release date. Final The Mummy Trailer – Tom Cruise needs a monster to defeat a monster

May 18, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Universal has a lot riding on The Mummy, as they’re hoping they can rival Disney/Marvel and Warner/DC’s interconnected coming book universes, with a monster movie universe. They’re kicking that off with The Mummy, and they’ve got some a-list talent to help them, with Tom Cruise starring. Russell Crowe is also due to show up as Dr. Jeykyll/Mr. Hyde.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilisation: The Mummy.

‘Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

Cruise is joined by a cast including Annabelle Wallis (upcoming King Arthur, television’s Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (TV’s American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson) and Oscar® winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator). The creative team on this action-adventure event is led by director/producer Alex Kurtzman and producer Chris Morgan, who have been instrumental in growing some of the most successful franchises of the past several years—with Kurtzman writing or producing entries in the Transformers, Star Trek and Mission: Impossible series, and Morgan being the narrative engineer of the Fast & Furious saga as it has experienced explosive growth from its third chapter on. Sean Daniel, who produced the most recent Mummy trilogy, produces alongside Kurtzman and Morgan.’

The film is due out in June. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

The Mummy Trailer – Tom Cruise launches an interconnected monster universe

December 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mummy-slideThe main aim of this trailer seems to be to suggest that this will be a very different proposition than the Brendan Fraser starring Mummy movies. And with Tom Cruise starring and a full-on blockbuster tone, Universal is also trying its best to ensure that their plans for an interconnected monster movie universe get off to a good start.

Jake Johnson & Annabelle Wallis Join Tom Cruise in The Mummy

March 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jake-johnsonA reboot of The Mummy franchise starring Tom Cruise always sounded a little odd, but it look like it’s happening, but the Mission: Impossible A-lister possibly being joined by Jake Johnson and Annabell Wallis, who are both in talks for the film.

Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan are producing the film, and are also in charge of creating a series of Avengers-style interconnected movies, based around the stable of Universal monsters. Sophia Boutella is also onboard to play The Mummy herself. Wallis meanwhile will be the female lead, who is a scientist, but there’s no news on who Johnson will be.

Although Universal is keeping its cards close to its chest, it’s believed this reboot will be set in the modern day. It’s also promised that it will be a horror movie, although mixed with action, adventure and probably a PG-13 certificate. Expect it in cinemas June 2017.

Let’s Be Cops (Blu-ray Review)

January 3, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jake Johnson, Damon Wayans Jr., Rob Riggle, James D'Arcy
Director: Luke Greenfield
Running Time: 104 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 26th 2014

God bless Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. They’re both very talented comic actors who struggle valiantly in Let’s Be Cops to make it work, but thanks to a script that’s far too dumb and clunky it’s all to little avail.

Ryan (Johnson) and Justin (Wayans) are friends who’ve reached their 30s and are struggling with the fact that neither of them are even close to living their dreams. When they’re invited to a reunion ‘costume party’ (which turns out to be a masquerade ball), they decide to go as cops. While the reunion is a disaster, they can’t help but notice the effect their police uniforms have on those they pass on the streets. [Read more…]

Jurassic World Trailer – Chris Pratt versus the dinosaurs

November 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jurassic-world-poster1-slideWatching the trailer for Jurassic World, you get the impression that Chris Pratt is the only person who’s seen the first three movies, as like most of us he quickly realises that while dinosaurs might be trouble, that goes double for creating your own genetically modified super-predator beast.

It does look pretty cool though, with the trailer – which we’d been promised on Friday but which has appeared online early – giving us a look at the rather futuristic and fully operational dino park. As you’d expect things quickly start to go wrong.

However it would appear that this time it’s not just humans vs. dinosaurs, as the genetically modified super-beast means many of the dinos are in just as much trouble as the people. Take a look at the trailer below.

Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty Simpkins, Nick Robinson, Irrfan Khan, Vincent D’Onofrio, Jake Johnson, Omar Sy, BD Wong and Judy Greer also star. It’s due out in the UK June 12th 2015. [Read more…]

Let’s Be Cops Red Band Trailer – Damon Wayans Jr. & Jake Johnson impersonate the police

March 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last time I looked, impersonating a police officer was a crime, but it’s also got a fair amount of potential for comedy.

That’s the premise behind Let’s Be Cops, starring Damon Wayans Jr. and Jake Johnson, which has just released its first red band trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘It’s the ultimate buddy cop movie except for one thing: they’re not cops. When two struggling pals dress as police officers for a costume party, they become neighborhood sensations. But when these newly-minted “heroes” get tangled in a real life web of mobsters and dirty detectives, they must put their fake badges on the line.’

James D’Arcy, Andy Garcia, Rob Riggle and Nina Dobrev also star.

It’ll be in cinemas this summer.

Safety Not Guaranteed (DVD)

February 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Aubrey Plaza, Jake Johnson, Mark Duplass, Karan Soni
Director: Colin Trevorrow
Running Time: 82 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: February 24th 2014

Safety Not Guaranteed certainly acted as a great calling card for director Colin Trevorrow. His low-budget film got plenty of people in Hollywood interested in working with him, leading to rumours he was in talks to direct Star Wars Episode VII. He’s since been hired to write and helm the upcoming Jurassic World. It’s certainly a big jump from this film, which was made for less than a million dollars, and while it is technically sci-fi, for most of its running time it plays out as an indie rom com.
