New Boy Erased Trailer – Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman & Russell Crowe star in the gay conversion drama

October 11, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There have been some powerful reactions to Joel Edgerton’s Boy Erased when it’s screened at festivals, with some saying it misses the mark while others are giving it Oscar buzz. However, with it currently having an 84% Fresh rating on RottenTomatoes, it’s certainly had a lot more love than hate.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘“Boy Erased” tells the story of Jared (Lucas Hedges), the son of a Baptist pastor in a small American town, who is outed to his parents (Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe) at age 19. Jared is faced with an ultimatum: attend a conversion therapy program – or be permanently exiled and shunned by his family, friends, and faith. Boy Erased is the true story of one young man’s struggle to find himself while being forced to question every aspect of his identity.’

Joel Edgerton wrote and directs the film, as well as playing one of the leader to the ‘therapy’ programme. It’s based on Garrard Conley’s acclaimed memoit, Boy Erased: A Memoir of Identity, Faith and Family. It also stars Cherry Jones, Michael “Flea” Balzary, Xavier Dolan, Troye Sivan, and Joe Alwyn.

The film arrives in US cinemas in November, ready for an Oscar push. It’ll be in UK cinemas on February 8th 2019. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

Boy Erased Trailer – Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman & Russell Crowe star in the gay conversion drama

July 17, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week we had the trailer for the first of two major movies about so-called ‘gay conversion therapy’, the largely discredited idea that you can coerce people into changing their sexuality. The first movie was The Miseducation Of Cameron Poster, starring Chloe Grace Moretz, and now we get our first look at the second, Boy Erased.

The Mummy (Blu-ray Review) – Tom Cruise is cursed (in several ways)!

October 21, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, Annabelle Wallis, Sofia Boutella, Jake Johnson
Director: Alex Kurtzman
Running Time: 110 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 23rd 2017 (UK)

While Hollywood has become increasingly obsessed with interconnected universes, Universal Pictures has felt a little left out due to the lack of comic book characters they own the rights to. To make up for it, they decided to go back to the classic movie monsters that the studio had such success with in the 1930s (indeed, they created an interconnected world of them back then). They’ve been busy attempting to build a linked series of movies around them, called Dark Universe.

The Mummy was the film designed to kick off the Dark Universe, with a big budget, an a-list star and a property everyone knows thanks to its 1990s/2000s resurrection with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. The response from critics and US audiences was muted however, with American box office stalling (although it did manage $400 million globally) and an abysmal RottenTomatoes rating (currently 16%). That’s caused a bit of a rethink about how the Dark Universe is going to pan out, with Bride Of Frankenstein pushed back, and the likes of The Invisible Man (with Johnny Depp) and The Wolfman currently without a release date. Xavier Dolan, Troye Sivan & Cherry Jones Join Joel Edgerton’s Gay Conversion Movie, Boy Erased

August 30, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Xavier Dolan

Writer/director/actor Joel Edgerton is pulling together an impressive cast for his gay-themed film, Boy Erased. He already had Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Manchester By The Sea Oscar-nominee Lucas Hedges sttached, and now he’s added the LGBT trio of filmmaker/actor Xavier Dolan, Youtube personality/singer Troye Sivan, and Tony & Emmy winner Cherry Jones.

Alongside them the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Michael ‘Flea’ Balzary has signed on to appear in the movie, alongside Emily Hinkler (Tyler Perry’s Boo 2), Jesse LaTourette (Z Nation), David Joseph Craig (The Gift), Théodore Pellerin (It’s Only the End of the World), and Britton Sear (Unfinished Business, HBO’s “Vice Principals”)

The film will be based on the book, Boy Erased: A Memoir of Identity, Faith, and Family by Garrard Conley, which telld the story of Jared (Hedges), the son of a Baptist pastor in a small American town, who is outed to his parents (Kidman and Crowe) at age 19. Jared is faced with an ultimatum: attend a gay conversion therapy program – or be permanently exiled and shunned by his family, friends, and faith. Boy Erased is ‘the true story of one young man’s struggle to find himself while being forced to question every aspect of his identity’.

Joel Edgerton comments, “The Boy Erased cast is rounding out in a way I could only dream of. We have gathered an incredible ensemble of actors.”

Shooting on the movie starts this autumn, with plans for an Oscar-bait release towards the end of 2018.

Joel Edgerton & Lucas Hedges Teaming For Gay Conversion Drama, With Russell Crowe & Nicole Kidman Circling

June 10, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Aussie actor Joel Edgerton has seen plenty of success in the likes of Black Mass and Warrior, but The Rover and Jane Got A Gun show he’s a writer to look out for, and he’s also not bad behind the camera, as he proved in The Gift. Now he’s set his sights on the insidious world of gay conversion therapy, as he’s planning to act, write and direct an adaptation of Garrard Conley’s 2016 memoir, Boy Erased.

Lucas Hedges (Manchester By The Sea) is set to take the lead role in the film, according the Deadline, which will recount Garrard’s ‘harrowing time attending Love in Action, an entity that attempts to deprogram LGBT people. The son of a Baptist pastor in a conservative small Arkansas town, Conley was outed to his parents at age 19. Conley was faced with attending a church-supported conversion therapy program that purports to “cure” homosexuality. The alternative was to risk losing his family, friends and his religion.

‘He entered the program, but instead of emerging from the brutal Twelve-Step Program as heterosexual, he left with the strength to embrace his true identity. The drama covers the difficulty of coming of age as a gay person in a conservative community, and the struggles that can occur when one tries to suppress that sexual identity.’

The effects the organisation had on those sent to be ‘converted’ were previously seen in the excellent documentary, ‘This Is What Love in Action Looks Like‘.

Edgerton is set to play the man in charge of the therapy programme, and he’s also talking to Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman to play the role of Garrard’s parents. However, at the moment it doesn’t look like they’re close to signing on.

Final The Mummy Trailer – Tom Cruise needs a monster to defeat a monster

May 18, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Universal has a lot riding on The Mummy, as they’re hoping they can rival Disney/Marvel and Warner/DC’s interconnected coming book universes, with a monster movie universe. They’re kicking that off with The Mummy, and they’ve got some a-list talent to help them, with Tom Cruise starring. Russell Crowe is also due to show up as Dr. Jeykyll/Mr. Hyde.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilisation: The Mummy.

‘Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

Cruise is joined by a cast including Annabelle Wallis (upcoming King Arthur, television’s Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (TV’s American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson) and Oscar® winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator). The creative team on this action-adventure event is led by director/producer Alex Kurtzman and producer Chris Morgan, who have been instrumental in growing some of the most successful franchises of the past several years—with Kurtzman writing or producing entries in the Transformers, Star Trek and Mission: Impossible series, and Morgan being the narrative engineer of the Fast & Furious saga as it has experienced explosive growth from its third chapter on. Sean Daniel, who produced the most recent Mummy trilogy, produces alongside Kurtzman and Morgan.’

The film is due out in June. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

The Mummy Trailer – Tom Cruise launches an interconnected monster universe

December 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mummy-slideThe main aim of this trailer seems to be to suggest that this will be a very different proposition than the Brendan Fraser starring Mummy movies. And with Tom Cruise starring and a full-on blockbuster tone, Universal is also trying its best to ensure that their plans for an interconnected monster movie universe get off to a good start.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilisation: The Mummy.
