Mission: Impossible – Fallout (Cinema Review)

July 18, 2018 By George Elcombe Leave a Comment

Starring: Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson
Director: Christopher McQuarrie
Running Time: 147 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: July 25th 2018 (UK)

It really doesn’t seem that long since I saw the last Mission: Impossible film (Rogue Nation, 2015), and I praised it for its ability to utilise the tried and tested formula of its predecessors, whilst being a fresh and exhilarating entry to the franchise. That’s something this series continues to do effortlessly with Fallout, which is without doubt one of the best entries. You can’t say that for many other franchises six movies in.

Without going too much into the plot, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team have to retrieve three plutonium cores before they are turned into nuclear bombs, as well as foil the plot of a religious terrorist group called the Apostles, who want to reshape the world. On this mission Hunt is chaperoned by CIA agent Walker (Henry Cavill), and we have the welcome return of regulars Benji (Simon Pegg), Luther (Ving Rhames), Ilsa (Rebeccan Fergurson), alongside some new and memorable additions. Tom Cruise Shares The First Pic From Top Gun 2

June 3, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For quite a few years there’s been talks of a second Top Gun movie. Indeed, it looked like it was nearing production with the director of the original, Tony Scott, at the helm. However, when Scott died the whole project got delayed.

Now though Tom Cruise is back on set for Top Gun: Maverick and to prove it he’s shared the first image from the movie, taken on the first day of shooting. Not much is known about the plot of the film, although there has been talk about it being another competition film, possibly between the new generation of drones and the old school fighter pilots like Cruise’s Maverick.

We should hear a lot more about it before it’s released in cinemas in July 2019. Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) is directing the movie.

American Made (Blu-ray Review) – Tom Cruise gets into the 1980s drug trade alongside the CIA

December 28, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Tom Cruise, Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright, Jesse Plemons, Caleb Landry Jones
Director: Doug Liman
Running Time: 115 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 26th 2017 (UK)

Barry Seal (Tom Cruise) is working as a pilot for TWA in the late 70s when she’s spotted by CIA agent Monty ‘Schafer’ (Domhnall Gleeson). Schafer wants Barry to fly reconnaissance missions in Central America, where the Soviet Union is backing Communist militias. His success at that leads to missions where he acts of the CIA courier to General Noriega in Panama, as well as helping to arm the anti-Communist Nicaraguan Contras in Honduras.

All this leads him to some dodgy places, including into the sphere of the Medellin Cartel, who get Barry to help them smuggle drugs into the US on his return trips. The CIA turn a blind eye to his side job as long as he still gets results. However, not every US law enforcement agency is as keen to ignore Barry’s smuggling. [Read more…]

The Mummy (Blu-ray Review) – Tom Cruise is cursed (in several ways)!

October 21, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, Annabelle Wallis, Sofia Boutella, Jake Johnson
Director: Alex Kurtzman
Running Time: 110 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 23rd 2017 (UK)

While Hollywood has become increasingly obsessed with interconnected universes, Universal Pictures has felt a little left out due to the lack of comic book characters they own the rights to. To make up for it, they decided to go back to the classic movie monsters that the studio had such success with in the 1930s (indeed, they created an interconnected world of them back then). They’ve been busy attempting to build a linked series of movies around them, called Dark Universe.

The Mummy was the film designed to kick off the Dark Universe, with a big budget, an a-list star and a property everyone knows thanks to its 1990s/2000s resurrection with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. The response from critics and US audiences was muted however, with American box office stalling (although it did manage $400 million globally) and an abysmal RottenTomatoes rating (currently 16%). That’s caused a bit of a rethink about how the Dark Universe is going to pan out, with Bride Of Frankenstein pushed back, and the likes of The Invisible Man (with Johnny Depp) and The Wolfman currently without a release date. Here’s the synopsis: ‘In Universal Pictures’ American Made, Tom Cruise reunites with his Edge of Tomorrow director, Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith), in this international escapade based on the outrageous (and real) exploits of a hustler and pilot unexpectedly recruited by the CIA to run one of the biggest covert operations in U.S. history. Based on a true story, American Made co-stars Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright, E. Roger Mitchell, Jesse Plemons, Lola Kirke, Alejandro Edda, Benito Martinez, Caleb Landry Jones and Jayma Mays.’

Joseph Kosinski May Direct Tom Cruise In Top Gun 2, Which Shoots Next Year

May 24, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Several years ago there was talk of a sequel to Top Gun, but that was put on hold when the movie’s director, Tony Scott, died back in 2012. However, now the movie is back on, with Tom Cruise revealing that he’s hoping to shoot the sequel next year, and Variety now adding that a director may already have been found.

The current frontrunner for the director’s chair is Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski, who’s previously worked with Cruise on Oblivion, and whose latest firefighting movie, Granite Mountain, is due for release later this year. Tom has apparently been busy ensuring Top Gun 2 would be ready to shoot next year while he’s been filming Mission Impossible: 6, which included interviewing directors. It was apparently Kosinski’s vision for the movie that won out, although no offer has yet been made to the director.

Not too much is known about the plot, but the film ‘will be set in a world of drone technology and fifth generation fighters and explore the end of an era of dogfighting which made the original film so exhilarating.’ It’s also believe Val Kilmer will return as Iceman, opposite Cruise’s Maverick.

Final The Mummy Trailer – Tom Cruise needs a monster to defeat a monster

May 18, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Universal has a lot riding on The Mummy, as they’re hoping they can rival Disney/Marvel and Warner/DC’s interconnected coming book universes, with a monster movie universe. They’re kicking that off with The Mummy, and they’ve got some a-list talent to help them, with Tom Cruise starring. Russell Crowe is also due to show up as Dr. Jeykyll/Mr. Hyde.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilisation: The Mummy.

‘Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

Cruise is joined by a cast including Annabelle Wallis (upcoming King Arthur, television’s Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (TV’s American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson) and Oscar® winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator). The creative team on this action-adventure event is led by director/producer Alex Kurtzman and producer Chris Morgan, who have been instrumental in growing some of the most successful franchises of the past several years—with Kurtzman writing or producing entries in the Transformers, Star Trek and Mission: Impossible series, and Morgan being the narrative engineer of the Fast & Furious saga as it has experienced explosive growth from its third chapter on. Sean Daniel, who produced the most recent Mummy trilogy, produces alongside Kurtzman and Morgan.’

The film is due out in June. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]
