Barry Seal (Tom Cruise) is working as a pilot for TWA in the late 70s when she’s spotted by CIA agent Monty ‘Schafer’ (Domhnall Gleeson). Schafer wants Barry to fly reconnaissance missions in Central America, where the Soviet Union is backing Communist militias. His success at that leads to missions where he acts of the CIA courier to General Noriega in Panama, as well as helping to arm the anti-Communist Nicaraguan Contras in Honduras.

All this leads him to some dodgy places, including into the sphere of the Medellin Cartel, who get Barry to help them smuggle drugs into the US on his return trips. The CIA turn a blind eye to his side job as long as he still gets results. However, not every US law enforcement agency is as keen to ignore Barry’s smuggling. [Read more…]

The Wall Trailer – Aaron Taylor-Johnson & John Cena get trapped in war for Doug Liman

December 8, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Doug Liman’s last movie was told on a massive scale, with Edge Of Tomorrow having huge sets, special effects. However, for his new movie, he’s paring things back to single location, but it’s a location with plenty of potential.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘“The Wall” follows two soldiers pinned down by an Iraqi sniper, with nothing but a crumbling wall between them. Their fight becomes as much a battle of will and wits as it is of lethally accurate marksmanship. Directed by Doug Liman (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, “The Bourne Ultimatum,” “Edge of Tomorrow”), “The Wall” stars Aaron Taylor Johnson (“Nocturnal Animals,” Kick-Ass,” “Savages” “Godzilla,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron”) and WWE star John Cena (“Trainwreck,” “Daddy’s Home”), Written by first-time screenwriter Dwain Worrell, “The Wall,” was produced by Amazon Studios, Big Indie Pictures and Picrow. The film is produced by David Bartis. Executive Producer is Ray Angelic. Associate Producer is Alison Winter. FilmNation is handling international sales.’

Take a look at the trailer below. It’ll be in US cinemas next March, and should be out in the UK around the same time. [Read more…]

Doug Liman To Direct Justice League Dark Movie, Dark Universe

August 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

doug-limanIt’s all change in the world of superheroes. In 2013 Guillermo Del Toro revealed he was working on a comic book movie set in the world of DC’s Justice League Dark. However, he left the director’s chair and decided only to produce.

Doug Liman meanwhile has been attached to helm Fox’s X-Men spin-off Gambit, starring Channing Tatum. He’s now left that movie behind and will be replacing Del Toro on the Justice League Dark film, which is now called Dark Universe.

The movie will revolve around a grittier, darker version of Justice League, with Variety suggesting the film will include John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna and Etrigan the Demon. However, exact plot details are being kept under wraps. Warner hopes that the movie will be a big part of their expanding DC Universe.

Doug Liman In Talks To Direct Channing Tatum In X-Men Spin-off Gambit

November 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

doug-limanThe X-Men spin-off Gambit seemed to be motoring along, but then hit a buffer finding a director, with numerous people turning it down, then Rupert Wyatt signing on, only to leave shortly afterwards. There was even talk of Channing Tatum leaving the title role.

However now the producers will be hoping they’ve sorted the problem, as THR reports that Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Edge Of Tomorrow director Doug Liman is in talks to make the movie.

There’s no news on the specific plot, but Josh Zetumer has written the script, which will concentrate on the mutant who, as Wikipedia says, ‘has the ability to mentally create, control, and manipulate pure kinetic energy to his desire. He is also incredibly knowledgeable and skilled in card-throwing, hand-to-hand combat, and the use of a staff. Gambit is known to charge playing cards and other objects with kinetic energy, using them as explosive projectiles.’

The problems have meant that the original February 2016 release date definitely won’t happen, and while it’s currently dated for October 2016, don’t be surprised to see that slip into 2017.

Tom Cruise Is Going To Luna Park With His Edge Of Tomorrow Director Doug Liman

September 10, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tom-cruiseDoug Liman and Tom Cruise had a great time together making Edge Of Tomorrow, and soon after they decided to team up again for the drug drama Mena. Now they’ve got yet another project they’re planning together, Luna Park.

Variety reports the news, saying that the film’s ‘plot revolves around a group of renegade employees who venture to the moon to steal an energy source.’

Liman has been attached to the movie for several years, and has previously considered the likes of Chris Evans and Andrew Garfield. Since then the script has gone through some major revisions. Cruise will only officially sign on once he’s seen a screenplay he’s happy with, but he’s provisionally attached.

He’d also need to find time to fit it into his schedule, as he’s expected to shoot Jack Reacher 2 and another Mission: Impossible in the next year of so.

Domhnall Gleeson Signs Up To Star Alongside Tom Cruise In Doug Liman’s Mena

April 23, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dohmnall-gleesonTom Cruise and Doug Liman had a great time working together on Edge Of Tomorrow, so much so that in January they announced that they were reuniting for the crime thriller Mena.

Now Liman has started to flesh out the cast, as Variety reports that Domhnall Gleeson and Sarah Wright will star in the movie.

Universal bought Barry Spinelli’s script last year for over a million dollars, with is about Barry Seal, a fired TWA pilot who became a major drug smuggler for the Medellin Cartel. He was later recruited by the DEA and CIA to provide intelligence, with his work tying to the Iran Contra scandal. He was assassinated by Colombians in 1986.

It’s not clear who Gleeson or Wright will play, but it adds to a big year for Domhnall, who’s set to appear in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Revenant, both of which will be out at the end of the year.

Tom Cruise & Doug Liman Reuniting For Drugs Tale Mena

January 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

edge-of-tomorrow-slideIf you watch the special features on the Edge Of Tomorrow Blu-ray, it’s clear Tom Cruise and Doug Liman made a good team, with Liman concentrating on the look, feel and storytelling, while Cruise was very hands on with preparing the shoot and actors.

It seems they want to keep that team going, as THR reports they’re set to reteam for Mena, with Liman taking over from the previously attached Ron Howard on the project.

Universal bought Barry Spinelli’s script last year for over a million dollars, with is about ‘Barry Seal, a fired TWA pilot who became a major drug smuggler for the Medellin Cartel. He was later recruited by the DEA and CIA to provide intelligence, with his work tying to the Iran Contra scandal. He was assassinated by Colombians in 1986.’

It’s not clear when it will shoot, but when it does it will also reunite Liman with Universal for the first time since The Bourne Identity.

Edge Of Tomorrow (Blu-ray Review)

October 13, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, Brendan Gleeson
Director: Doug Liman
Running Time: 113 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: October 13th 2014 (UK)

I get the feeling there was a bit of ‘I told you so’ going round in Hollywood after Edge Of Tomorrow failed to live up to financial expectations. And in true Tinsel Town fashion they decided the problem was the name. As a result it’s got a bit of a makeover for its home entertainment release, where the cover would suggest it’s called ‘Live. Die. Repeat’ – which to be honest is a much better name than the pretty much meaningless Edge Of Tomorrow.

The fact it barely cracked $100 million in the US certainly isn’t the film’s fault as it’s a great slice of big budget action, which for the first time in several years reminds us exactly why Tom Cruise is a movie star. And in an era of tentpole movies that try to outdo each other in how po-faced they can be (I’m blaming you, Christopher Nolan), it’s refreshing to find one that has a great sense of humour without being as dumb as much Hollywood fare (I’m blaming you, Michael Bay).
