New The Circle Trailer – Emma Watson & Tom Hanks explore the dangers of modern technology

February 9, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Based on a Dave Eggers novel, The Circle is a film that’s vaguely science-fiction, but actually far closer to reality than we might like to admit. After all, Google and Facebook already know more about us than even our closest friends.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Circle is a gripping modern thriller, set in the not-too-distant future, starring Emma Watson (“Harry Potter”), Tom Hanks (“Sully”) and John Boyega (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens”). When Mae (Emma Watson) is hired to work for the world’s largest and most powerful tech & social media company, she sees it as an opportunity of a lifetime.  As she rises through the ranks, she is encouraged by the company’s founder, Eamon Bailey (Tom Hanks), to engage in a groundbreaking experiment that pushes the boundaries of privacy, ethics and ultimately her personal freedom.  Her participation in the experiment, and every decision she makes begin to affect the lives and future of her friends, family and that of humanity.’

The likes of John Boyega, Karen Gillan, Patton Oswalt, Bill Paxton and Glenne Headly also star. Take a look at the trailer below. The film will be in US cinemas in April, but no UK date is currently set. [Read more…]

The Circle Trailer – Emma Watson and Tom Hanks take on a techno-thriller

December 6, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-circles-slide-2017Based on a Dave Eggers novel, The Circle is a film that’s vaguely science-fiction, but actually far closer to reality than we might like to admit. After all, Google and Facebook already know more about us than even our closest friends.

Watson plays a young woman who’s hired for a big job in an Internet company called the Circle, which links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency. It’s there that she meets a mysterious older man, Bailey, who has created the Circle.

Director James Ponsoldt comments to USA Today, “Bailey’s notion is that knowing is good, and knowing everything is better. He believes all experiences should be available to everyone, not only the privileged or people who can afford to them. He’s deeply interested in technology that can make people share all human experiences with everyone. He’s a boundary pusher, even boundary destroyer.”

The likes of John Boyega, Karen Gillan, Patton Oswalt, Bill Paxton and Glenne Headly also star. Take a look at the trailer below. The film will be in cinemas next year. [Read more…]

Nightcrawler (Blu-ray Review)

March 1, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Bill Paxton
Director: Dan Gilroy
Running Time: 117 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 2nd 2015

I’m not entirely sure why Jake Gyllenhaal felt the need to lose loads of weight for Nightcrawler, but conbined with a very good performance he certainly looks the part of a man who’s one step away from being a psychopath – and maybe not even one step.

He is Louis Bloom, who’s certainly not lacking in confidence and believes he’s got everything to offer the world, but his life and career is going nowhere, partly because he lacks direction and also because he had no issue being on the edge of the law. However he stumbles into a career he never expected when he meets a Nightcrawler – freelance cameramen who race to emergencies in the hope of getting sensationalist footage for the local news. Edge Of Tomorrow (Blu-ray Review)

October 13, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, Brendan Gleeson
Director: Doug Liman
Running Time: 113 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: October 13th 2014 (UK)

I get the feeling there was a bit of ‘I told you so’ going round in Hollywood after Edge Of Tomorrow failed to live up to financial expectations. And in true Tinsel Town fashion they decided the problem was the name. As a result it’s got a bit of a makeover for its home entertainment release, where the cover would suggest it’s called ‘Live. Die. Repeat’ – which to be honest is a much better name than the pretty much meaningless Edge Of Tomorrow.

The fact it barely cracked $100 million in the US certainly isn’t the film’s fault as it’s a great slice of big budget action, which for the first time in several years reminds us exactly why Tom Cruise is a movie star. And in an era of tentpole movies that try to outdo each other in how po-faced they can be (I’m blaming you, Christopher Nolan), it’s refreshing to find one that has a great sense of humour without being as dumb as much Hollywood fare (I’m blaming you, Michael Bay). The Colony Trailer – Laurence Fishburne, Kevin Zegers & Bill Paxton are in an ice age

March 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

When Laurence Fishburne, Bill Paxton and Kevin Zegers signed on to star in The Colony, not much was revealed about the plot, other it ”revolves around a group of survivors forced underground by the next ice age. There, they must fight to preserve humanity against a savage threat.’

Now we get to see a bit more with the release of the first trailer. Coming Soon has a lengthier synopsis, which says, ‘Set during the next ice age, an outpost of colonists struggle to survive below the world’s frozen surface. Short on supplies, and plagued by illness and internal conflict, the colonists suspect the worst when they mysteriously lose contact with their only other known settlement, Colony 5. When Colony 7’s leader Briggs (Laurence Fishburne) decides to lead an expedition to discover what happened, he is challenged by Mason (Bill Paxton), his former comrade-in-arms, who has his own ideas of what is best for the colonists. Briggs takes two volunteers on the mission, the young Graydon, and Sam (Kevin Zegers), a strong-willed mechanic who seizes the opportunity to confront the icy wasteland that orphaned him. When they reach their destination, the team discover a threat much worse than nature and must battle to save themselves and protect their fellow colonists in what might be humanity’s last stand.’

No UK date is currently set, but it hits US theatres on April 12th. And take a look at the poster below.

Bill Paxton In Talks To Join Cruise For All You Need Is Kill

September 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tom Cruise has been attached to All You Need Is Kill for over a year, with Emily Blunt joining him a few months ago. However it’s only now things have moved close enough to production that they’re starting to fill out the cast, with THR reporting that Bill Paxton is in talks for the film.

The film is based on a graphic novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, and tells the story of a solider (Cruise) who is forced to keep reliving the last day of his life over and over again after he is killed in a war against an alien race. The solider uses these time loops to train and become a better soldier (it’s a little bit Groundhog Day and a little bit like a videogame). Should he accept the role, Paxton will play the “tough leader of Cruise’s platoon.”

Dante Harper (Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters) wrote the script with Joby Harold (who is in the midst of doing a rewrite). Doug Liman will direct, with production set to start later this year in London.

Bill Paxton May Take On 2 Guns Opposite Wahlberg & Washington

June 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For a while now, Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington have been attached to 2 Guns for Contraband director Baltasar Kormákur. Now they may have some company, as Variety reports that Billl Paxton is in talks for the film.

Based on the comics by Steven Grant, 2 Guns follows a DEA agent and a Naval Intelligence officer (Wahlberg and Washington) who unknowingly go undercover to investigate each other. The pair find themselves involved with a heist and are told they are stealing from the mob, but the truth is that they have actually stolen from the CIA. Paula Patton will play the project’s female lead. If Paxton signs on, he’ll play a “high ranking CIA operative,” who probably isn’t very happy about the actions of Wahlberg and Washington.

Paxton’s a bit of a late addition, as the movie started filming this week and hit cinemas next year.

Bill Paxton Directing Kung Fu

November 1, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

He may be best known as an actor, but until the TV series Big Love came along to fill up his time, Pill Paxton was also beginning to carve a career for himself as a director with The Greatest Game Ever Played and the excellent Frailty. Now he’s planning to get back behind the camera as Variety reports that Paxton is in talks to direct the Kung Fu for Legendary Pictures.

The movie is based on the classic 70s TV series that starred David Carradine. He played a Shaolin monk as he wandered across America, protesting that he had a desire for peace but regularly having to show off his impressive martial arts skills. It seems likely though that this movie will either change the plot significantly or focus on the early days of the character when he was in Asia learning the ways of the East, as the movie is set to film in China.

John J. McLaughlin (Black Swan) is writing the script, with filming likely to shoot as next summer.
