New Tully Trailer – Charlize Theron, director Jason Reitman & writer Diablo Cody are back together

March 8, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Young Adult wasn’t the success any of them probably hoped, it hasn’t stopped actor Charlize Theron, writer Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman reteaming for Tully. The movie has just released a new trailer, giving us a good look at the comedy about a mother and a nanny, which has been getting some good notices at festivals.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A new comedy from Academy Award®-nominated director Jason Reitman (“Up in the Air”) and Academy Award®-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (“Juno”). Marlo (Academy Award® winner Charlize Theron), a mother of three including a newborn, is gifted a night nanny by her brother (Mark Duplass). Hesitant to the extravagance at first, Marlo comes to form a unique bond with the thoughtful, surprising, and sometimes challenging young nanny named Tully (Mackenzie Davis).’

The movie is due out on April 20th. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

The Lazarus Effect Trailer – Olivia Wilde is back from the dead alongside Evans Peters & Mark Duplass

January 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lazarus-effect-olivia-wildeThe plot for The Lazarus Effect sounds a bit like a rehash of Flatliners, but the first trailer thankfully shows that while there are echoes of Joel Schumacher’s 1990 movie, it does want to be something in its own right too.

The very short synopsis simply says ‘The film follows a group of medical students who discover a way to bring dead patients back to life.’

The movie centres around Mark Duplass and Olivia Wilde, who discover how to resurrect people. After she dies, he decides to use the technique on her, but as you’d expect in a horror movie what returns isn’t quite the same as what left.

Evan Peters and Donald Glover also star in the movie, which is out in the US at the end of February, although it’s not clear when it’ll arrive in the UK. [Read more…]

Safety Not Guaranteed (DVD)

February 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Aubrey Plaza, Jake Johnson, Mark Duplass, Karan Soni
Director: Colin Trevorrow
Running Time: 82 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: February 24th 2014

Safety Not Guaranteed certainly acted as a great calling card for director Colin Trevorrow. His low-budget film got plenty of people in Hollywood interested in working with him, leading to rumours he was in talks to direct Star Wars Episode VII. He’s since been hired to write and helm the upcoming Jurassic World. It’s certainly a big jump from this film, which was made for less than a million dollars, and while it is technically sci-fi, for most of its running time it plays out as an indie rom com. Donald Glover & Evan Peters Are Reawakening, Alongside Mark Duplass & Olivia Wilde

June 12, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

evan-petersCommunity’s Donald Glover and American Horror Story’s Evan Peters have signed up to star in Reawakening for director David Gelb (a few months about the directorial quartet Radio Silence (V/H/S) were in talks to helm, but they are no longer involved).

The film, based on Luke Dawson’s script, is about a group of students who find a way to bring the dead back to life. As you might expect, they soon discover that there are dire consequences to those actions (these sort of things never go well in the movies, do they?). Donald Glover and Evan Peters will play members of this research team, alongside the previously-attached Mark Duplass and Olivia Wilde.

Jason Blum is producing through his Blumhouse Studios company, with Lionsgate’s Erik Feig and John Sacchi overseeing the project for the studio. (Source: TheWrap)

Olivia Wilde & Mark Duplass Get A Reawakening

May 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

olivia-wildeOlivia Wilde and Mark Duplass will be bringing the dead back to life in the new thriller Reawakening, with Jiro Dreams of Sushi documentary helmer David Gelb set to direct, according to THR.

The movie is about a research team who’ve created a serum that can bring the dead back to life. When the lead doctor’s daughter dies, she is given the serum. As you might expect, things don’t exactly go to plan. and it leads to something less than ideal.

Luke Dawson and Jeremy Slater came up with the script, which certainly has a decent enough premise, although it is one that could be as dreadful as it could be good, depending on the execution.

Susan Sarandon Joins Melissa McCarthy’s Tammy, With Kathy Bates Going Lesbian

March 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

susan-sarandonMelissa McCarthy is set to make her directorial debut this year with Tammy, alongside hubby Ben Falcone, working from a script they wrote together. Now she’s started to pull the cast together, with THR saying Susan Sarandon and Kathy Bates are in talks to join the film, with Deadline adding that Mark Duplass has also signed up.

The screenplay is about a woman (McCarthy) who loses her job at a fast food restaurant and then finds out her husband is cheating on her. She goes on a road trip with her foul-mouthed, hard-drinking grandmother (Sarandon) to escape the problems in her life.

Shirley MacLaine was apparently in talks for the grandmother role, but that didn’t work out, and so Sarandon is on the process of stepping in. Kathy Bates meanwhile will be ‘the grandmother’s lesbian friend who saves the duo from some bad spots’. Duplass meanwhile is a man who McCarthy meets and develops a strange relationship with during the trip.

The film will shoot this spring.

Jennifer Aniston, Mark Duplass & Ben Kingsley Going To A Convention

February 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jennifer-anistonJennifer Aniston, Mark Duplass and Ben Kingsley certainly make an interesting cast for a comedy. Variety reports they’re getting together for Convention, which a press release describes as a ‘mind-bending comedy, embarking on a Charlie Kaufman-esque journey that puts them between the worlds of the cardboard box industry and inter-dimensional molecular mayhem’.

The film comes from Justin Reardon, who has just finished his directorial debut, A Many Splintered Thing, starring Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan.

Convention is about mild-mannered Paul (Duplass) and his feisty sister Abby (Aniston), who set out to change the box storage world with Paul’s invention of the 5-sided box. Breaking all the laws of physics with their new product, their fiercest competitors, including maniacal box magnate Bobby Schroedinger (Kingsley) and Mathematical Construct, an atomic guardian of the natural order of universal mathematical balance, try to stop them securing the deal of their lives – oh, and ripping a giant apocalyptic whole in the fabric of the universe. On discovering the damage he’s causing, Paul must race against time to put the galaxy back in order and save the girl of his dreams.

It’s certainly sounds ambitious, but whether it really can channel the madness of Charlie Kaufman movies such as Being John Malkovich, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is yet to be seen. The movie is currently looking for backers at the Berlin Film Festival.

Your Sister’s Sister Trailer

April 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A year after his brother Tom’s death, Jack (Mark Duplass) is an emotionally unstable slacker. When he makes a scene at a memorial party, Tom’s ex-girlfriend Iris (Emily Blunt) offers up her family cabin on an island in the Pacific Northwest so Jack can seek catharsis in solitude. Once there, however, he runs into Iris’ sister Hannah (Rosemarie DeWitt), a lesbian reeling from the abrupt end of a seven-year relationship who finds solace in the affable Tom’s unexpected presence, and the two bond over a long night of drinking. The blurry evening concludes with an awkward sexual incident made worse by Iris’ sudden presence at the cabin the next morning, which sets into motion a twisted tale of ever-complicated relationships. The film hits the UK on June 29th.
