Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge (Cinema Review) – Jack Sparrow is back!

May 22, 2017 By BigGayPictureShow Leave a Comment

Starring: Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Javier Bardem, Kaya Scodelario, Brenton Thwaites
Director: Joachim Ronning, Espen Sandberg
Running Time: 129 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: May 25th 2017 (UK)

To be honest I enjoy sequels and franchises as long as they keep up the standard and improve upon previous entries, which sadly often isn’t the case. I have reviewed countless sequels over the years and with this review I don’t want to regurgitate what I have previously written about franchises, and I will try to keep this to a minimum with this review as I don’t want to go over old ground; but rather tread new waters (pun fully intended).

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was a pleasant surprise to a lot of people when it came out in 2003. Many asked how could a film based on an old amusement park ride have such an effect on audiences around the world, and the answer is because it was fun. Cutthroat Island (1995) was a well-documented bomb at the box office and it was a risky move for Disney to release the first Pirates film, but it paid off both financially and critically. New Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge Trailer – Javier Bardem really doesn’t like Jack Sparrow

March 27, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I’m still not sure why the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie is called Dead Men Tell No Tales in the US, but in the UK it’s Salazar’s Revenge. Now a new trailer has arrived, which concentrates on why Javier Bardem’s Salazar hates Jack Sparrow so much and is determined to get his revenge..

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.’

It’ll be in cinemas next May. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge Trailer – Jack Sparrow is a wanted man

March 2, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I’m still not sure why the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie is called Dead Men Tell No Tales in the US, but in the UK it’s Salazar’s Revenge. Now a new trailer has arrived, which tells us more about the plot than anything we’ve seen before, and exactly why Javier Bardem’s Salazar is after revenge – which involves a very youthful Jack Sparrow.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge Extended Super Bowl Spot – Back on the high seas with Jack Sparrow

February 6, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Disney hasn’t hyped the return of Pirates of the Caribbean with Salazar’s Revenge (Dead Men Tell No Tales in the US) as much as we might have expected. However, they did give the movie a Super Bowl spot, with an extended version released online, which you can take a look at below.

It also confirms the return of Orlando Bloom, who looks like he’s been having a few problems since we last saw him in the franchise.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. It’ll be in cinemas in May. [Read more…]

Gods Of Egypt (Blu-ray Review)

October 30, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Brenton Thwaites, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Gerard Butler, Geoffrey Rush
Director: Alex Proyas
Running Time: 126 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: October 24th 2016 (UK)

When it was first announced, Gods Of Egypt sounded like it could be a fun and interesting movie, with the Egyptian Gods living alongside man in a pretty fantasy sci-fi way. However, it was rather stillborn at the cinema, with terrible reviews and just $31 at the US Box Office, despite costing $140 million to make. It also got a lot of bad PR for being a film about Egypt, where nearly all the major characters are white, except for Chadwick Boseman’s Thoth.

The film kicks off with Osiris (Bryan Brown) being about to hand the job of ruling Egypt to his son, Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). However, Osiris’ aggrieved brother, Set (Gerard Butler), has other ideas, interrupting the ceremony, killing his sibling and stealing Horus’ eyes. The power-hungry Set takes over, plunging the country into chaos as a result. [Read more…]

Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge Teaser – Captain Sparrow & co. are back

October 3, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pirates-of-the-caribbean-5-teaser-slideEver since it was officially announced, the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie has been titled Dead Men Tell No Tales. It’s still called that in the US, but for some reason it’s been retitled in the UK, as Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge. I’m not quite sure how that’s any better.

The news of the new title accompanies the first teaser for the movie, which you can watch below.

New Gods Of Egypt Trailer – Gerard Butler, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau walk like Egyptians

December 16, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

god-of-egypt-trailer-slideWhen the first trailer for Gods Of Egypt debuted a few weeks ago, the main reaction was, ‘WTF’? That’s not just because it looked completely insane and weird, but also due to the fact all the Egyptian gods are played by white people (plus one token Black dude). The latter even resulted in the studio and director issuing an apology and saying they should have done better with the racial diversity.

While they may have admitted they should have done things differently, they’ve still got a movie to bring out, and so a new trailer has now arrived, which it has to be said suggests the film may actually have a few interesting things about it – although it’s still pretty nuts and white-washy. Take a look below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The survival of mankind hangs in the balance as an unexpected mortal hero Bek (Brenton Thwaites) undertakes a thrilling journey to save the world. In order to succeed, he must enlist the help of the powerful and vengeful god Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) in an unlikely alliance against Set (Gerard Butler), the merciless god of darkness, who has usurped Egypt’s throne, plunging the once peaceful and prosperous empire into chaos and conflict.

‘As their breathtaking battle against Set and his henchmen takes them into the afterlife and across the heavens, both god and mortal must pass tests of courage and sacrifice if they hope to prevail in the epic final confrontation.’

The film is due out in 2016.

Gods Of Egypt Teaser Trailer – Gerard Butler, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau & more get their gods on

November 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gods-of-egypt-character-poster1-slideAfter some character posters arrived last year, the teaser trailer for Alex Proyas’ Gods Of Egypt has arrived, and it looks like a slightly insane live-action cartoon. It could be a lot of fun, or just totally crazy – but at least it teaches us the surprising lesson that nearly everyone in Ancient Egypt was white.

Gerard Butler, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau & More Get Gods Of Egypt Character Posters

November 15, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gods-of-egypt-character-poster1-slideGods Of Egypt certainly isn’t a movie that will satisfy those who accuse Hollywood of white-washing everything, as despite being about Egyptian gods, there are an awful lot of pale-looking people in the movie, as evidenced by a set of new posters, with only Chadwick Boseman representing those whose ancestors probably were in Africa several thousand years ago (although probably in a different part of the continent).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Magic, monsters, gods and madness reign throughout the palaces and pyramids of the Nile River Valley in this action-adventure inspired by the classic mythology of Egypt. With the survival of mankind hanging in the balance, an unexpected hero takes a thrilling journey to save the world and rescue his true love. Set (Gerard Butler), the merciless god of darkness, has usurped Egypt’s throne, plunging the once peaceful and prosperous empire into chaos and conflict. With only a handful of heroic rebels opposing Set’s savage rule, Bek (Brenton Thwaites), a bold and defiant mortal, enlists the aid of powerful god Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) in an unlikely alliance against the evil overlord. As their breathtaking battle against Set and his henchmen take them into the afterlife and across the heavens, both god and mortal must pass tests of courage and sacrifice if they hope to prevail in the spectacular final confrontation.’

Alex Proyas directs the movie, which from the evidence of these posters looks a bit mental. It’s due out in February, so expect a trailer very soon.

Take a look below at the posters which feature Gerard Butler, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Chadwick Boseman, Elodie Yung, Courtney Eaton, and Brenton Thwaites.

Kaya Scodelario Eyed For Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Female Lead

January 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kaya-scodelarioThe Pirates certainly have a formula – Jack Sparrow, young guy, young woman and a supernatural villain. It doesn’t look like they’ll be breaking away from that with the fifth film, as Johnny Depp will once again be Jack, Brenton Thwaites is the young guy, and Javier Bardem will be a bad guy ghost.

Now it’s time to find the young woman, with Deadline reporting that Maze Runner’s Kaya Scodelario is in early talks to take on the female lead and love interest for Thwaites British soldier.

Not too much is known about the plot of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, other than that Bardem will be a murderous ghost called Captain Brand, who’s seeking revenge for his brother.

Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rø (Kon-Tiki) will directing from a script by Jeff Nathanson (Men in Black 3, Tower Heist). Filming starts next month in Australia, with a July 7th, 2017 release date already set.
