Ray Winstone Up To Sean Penn, Javier Bardem and Idris Elba In The Gunman

June 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ray-winstoneOn Friday we reported that Idris Elba is in talks to join Sean Penn and Javier Bardem in the thriller The Gunman. Now another Brit may sign up, as Deadline reports that Ray Winstone is likely to be part of the cast, as is Italian actress Jasmine Trinca.

The Gunman is based on a novel by Jean-Patrick Manchette. It follows an international operative (Penn) who is betrayed by his handlers and goes on the run. Winstone is set to play one of those handlers, who’s been Penn’s mentor up to that point. It isn’t known who Trinca will play.

No specifics have been released about Bardem’s role, although it’s presumed he’ll be the villain. Elba meanwhile is up to play a mysterious operative called Dupont, although it’s not clear if he’s working with or against Penn.

Pierre Morel (Taken) is set to direct from a script by Pete Travis. Shooting is slated to begin in Barcelona and other European locations later this month.

New Pacific Rim Featurette – Take a look at the incredible oversized robot set

May 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

While Pacific Rim will undoubtedly feature a lot of CGI, Guillermo Del Toro was keen to do plenty of practical shooting, and that included a four-storey high set of the robots’ head, which was able to move, shake and drop 15 feet so the actors could really react to action. The poor actors were also inside suits attached to enormous, complex machines to make things even more difficult. A new featurette explores that, and it’s well worth a look.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure “Pacific Rim.”

‘When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end.  To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.  But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.  On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.  Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

‘Oscar® nominee Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”) is directing “Pacific Rim” from a script by Travis Beacham (“Clash of the Titans”).  Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Mary Parent are producing, with Callum Greene serving as executive producer. The film stars Charlie Hunnam (TV’s “Sons of Anarchy”), Idris Elba (“Thor”), Rinko Kikuchi (“The Brothers Bloom”), Charlie Day (“Horrible Bosses”), and Ron Perlman (the “Hellboy” films).  The ensemble cast also includes Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke.’

The film’s out July 12th

Pacific Rim – Drift Space Featurette – See how the giant robots are piloted

May 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The trailers for Pacific Rim have certainly sold the massive special effects and incredible look of the movie, but there’s not been much on the human side of the film. Now a new featurette has popped up which should help with that, as it concentrates on how two human pilots are needed for the giant robots in the movie.

It’s well worth a look.

Here’s the film’s synopsis: ‘When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.’

It’s out July 12th.

New Posters For The Smurfs 2 & Mandela Biopic A Long Walk To Freedom

May 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

long-walk-to-freedom-poster1
New posters have popped up online for the Nelson Mandela biopic Long Walk To Freedom, as well as the very different (but I suspect higher grossing) The Smurfs 2. Or perhaps they won’t be so different and Smurfs 2 will be a searing indictment, of South African apartheid. But probably not.

Idris Elba plays Mandela in Long Walk To Freedom, which will chart Nelson’s life from his boyhood through his work as an anti-apartheid campaigner, onto his long imprisonment, until he finally became President of South Africa.

The Smurf 2 meanwhile is about little blue people, who do face oppression from Gargamel, but which isn’t quite the same as what Mandela had to deal with. The non-Smurfs in the pics below are Vexy (Christina Ricci) and Hackus (JB Smoove). They’re Naughties that are created by Gargamel. The plot involves the Smurfs ending up in Paris, and Smurfette getting kidnapped – although she may have the secret of how to turn the Naughties into real Smurfs.

The Smurfs 2 is out this summer, while Long Walk To Freedom is eyeing a Oscar-bait November release.

New Pacific Rim Trailer – Guillermo Del Toro’s cancels the apocalypse in truly epic style

May 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In a summer filled with sequels and movies based on known properties, the original movie that’s looking the most exciting is definitely Pacific Rim, and the latest trailer suggests this is going to be a movie told on a truly epic scale. Indeed it’s look pretty awesome.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.’

The movie opens July 12th. [Read more…]

Pacific Rim Wonder Con Trailer – Guillermo Del Toro’s film is looking truly epic

April 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Warner Bros and Guillermo Del Toro cut together a new Pacific Rim trailer for Wonder Con, and the original plan was to only show it there. But after a great response, they’ve decided we should all get a look. That would seem a good idea, as this takes the movie to a whole different level thatwhat we’ve seen before – it’s always looked huge, but this is massive!

There’s also plenty of info, such as a brief history of the fact Kaiju (monsters) are being sent through a portal in the Pacific and deliberately aimed at massive population centres. This results in the Jaeger programme, where massive robots are piloted by two humans to battle the creatures. However while it was initially a success, things have gone wrong.

It’s an impressive trailer, which should massive up the excitement for the film. It’s due July 12th in both the US and UK.

Pacific Rim CES Trailer – Guillermo Del Toro shows off more monster madness

January 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s always a big job selling massive budget movies based on new ideas, partly because studios are so paranoid about have spent hundreds of millions on something nobody knows anything about. As a result, the publicity blitz for Pacific Rim has started early, with a second trailer released just a few weeks after the first.

It all looks rather cool in this CES promo, with Idris Elba introducing us to the 300ft tall monsters that are spewing out of a portal deep beneath the Pacific and attacking the coast, and so humanity fights back with gargantuan robots piloted by people.

The film is due out July 12th, 2013.

Idris Elba & Rinko Kikuchi Face-off In New Pacific Rim Image

December 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pacific-rim-preview-pic1A couple of weeks ago we had the first trailer for Pacific Rim, and now Warner Bros. has released a new image, giving us a look at Idris Elba as Stacker Pentecost and Rinko Kikuchi as Mako Mori, in what appears to be some sort of war room.

It’s likely the place where acts as the central control for the film’s gigantic, human-piloted robots, which are sent into battle against enormous monsters that emerge from a dimensional rip in the Pacific and attack the coasts.

Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim is certainly one of the biggest movies to look out for next summer, so expect to hear much, much more about it in the run up to its July 12th 2013 release. Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, Burn Gorman, Diego Klattenhoff and Clifton Collins Jr. star.

Pacific Rim Trailer – Giant monsters and robots, what more do you want?

December 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Pacific Rim look like it could be an awful lot of fun. Just the idea is great – 300ft tall monsters are spewing out of a portal deep beneath the Pacific and attacking the coast, and so humanity fights back with gargantuan robots piloted by people. Now the first trailer for the movie has arrived, which makes it look even better, shot through with Guillermo Del Toro’s signature style.

It’s a movie that’s going to be told on a massive scale, with huge amounts of very cool special effects. Thankfully the trailer also gives us a little bit of the plot, suggesting someone is sending these monsters and we don’t know who.

The film is due out July 12th, 2013, but enjoy the trailer and new poster above and below.pacific-rim-new-poster
