When it comes to tales of the private lives of old time movie stars, it’s almost impossible to tell the truth from the fiction. The studio created versions of star biographies were so far from the truth that it’s bred an entire industry exposing the supposed foibles of Hollywood’s Golden Age elite, much of which is dubious at best.

Now a new book claims to have the inside story of many of the gay and bisexual stars of the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Scotty Bowers, whose stories are legendary even if he’s only just going on record with them now, is set to publish his memoir, ‘Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars’, in a couple of weeks time.

The NY Times reports the the book’s ribald stories include claims that he fixed Katharine Hepburn up with more than 150 women, as well as that he provided guys from his stable for Cary Grant, George Cukor and Rock Hudson. Bower’s tales are apparently a virtual who’s who, also including the likes of Spencer Tracy, Cole Porter and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. He even allegedly got into the business after being propositioned and ‘hired’ by Mrs Miniver star Walter Pidgeon in 1943 when he was just 23.

With armies of studio publicists having obscured the truth and stars having spent decades polishing their image, it is tough to tell how many of Bowers’ claims are true and how much of it is him trying to sell books.
