It’s fair to day there are still plenty of people who are unsure whether Disney should be making a belated sequel to one of the true classics of family cinema, Mary Poppins. However, a new trailer has arrived to try and convince us it’ll be worth having the magical nanny back, in the form of Emily Blunt this time – and it has to be said, it does a good job.
Here’s the synopsis: ‘“Mary Poppins Returns” stars: Emily Blunt as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure; Lin-Manuel Miranda as her friend Jack, an optimistic street lamplighter who helps bring light—and life—to the streets of London; Ben Whishaw as Michael Banks; Emily Mortimer as Jane Banks; and Julie Walters as the Banks’ housekeeper Ellen; with Colin Firth as Fidelity Fiduciary Bank’s William Weatherall Wilkins; and Meryl Streep as Mary’s eccentric cousin, Topsy. The film also introduces three new Banks’ children played by Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and newcomer Joel Dawson. Angela Lansbury appears as the Balloon Lady, a treasured character from the PL Travers books and Dick Van Dyke is Mr. Dawes Jr., the retired chairman of the bank now run by Firth’s character.
‘The film is directed by Rob Marshall from a screenplay by David Magee and screen story by Magee & Marshall & John DeLuca based upon The Mary Poppins Stories by PL Travers. The producers are Marshall, DeLuca and Marc Platt with Callum McDougall serving as executive producer and the music is by Marc Shaiman with songs by Shaiman and Scott Wittman.’

However, the first teaser trailer has arrived to try and convince us it’ll be worth having the magical nanny back, in the form of Emily Blunt this time – and it has to be said, it does a good job.
There are as many people who seem to be excited about a new Mary Poppins movie as there are people who think the whole thing is sacrilege. Indeed, it’s probably the movie in Disney’s new age of new takes on their classics that’s caused the most comment.
Disney’s planned follow-up to Mary Poppins is fast coming together, with Emily Blunt in the lead role, Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda in the equivalent of the Dick Van Dyke role, and Meryl Streep in talks to play Poppins’ cousin, Topsy. Now 
There are very few movies that wouldn’t be made better by the presence of Meryl Streep, and we can’t imagine Disney’s planned sequel to Mary Poppins will be any difference.
