Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt & Ryan Phillippe Turned Down Brokeback Mountain, Says Gus Van Sant

July 22, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s difficult to imagine anyone except for Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger playing the lead roles in Brokeback Mountain, but it might have been very different. Before Ang Lee took over, Gus Van Sant was developing the film. However, he’s recently told Indiewire that one of the reasons he didn’t make the movie was how difficult it was to find someone to star.

He says “Nobody wanted to do it. I was working on it, and I felt like we needed a really strong cast, like a famous cast. That wasn’t working out. I asked the usual suspects: Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Ryan Phillippe. They all said no.”

It could have been a very different film with them, but before we cry ‘homophobia’ for their decision not to make the movie, Van Sant adds that he was angling to make a movie very different to what others involved were hoping for. He comments, “The original story, which was in The New Yorker, was so beautiful and simple, and Larry [McMurtry, screenwriter] had turned it into something that resembled ‘The Last Picture Show’. Which was really good if you were thinking along certain lines … I was thinking more like ‘Gerry,’ ‘Elephant,’ ‘Last Days.’ I kind of wanted to go back to the simplest view of the short story, which I couldn’t do … I didn’t really want to go and talk Larry and Diana [Ossana, producer] out of what they had created, because it was great.”

Ossana confirmed to Indiewire that those actors were approached, but was very diplomatic about why they might have turned it down, just saying, “Yes, all those young gentlemen (at the time) turned down the project, for various reasons.”

It’s also known that Mark Wahlberg was approached and turned the movie down. At the time Gyllenhaal and Ledger were up and comers, although it was still almost unheard of for a mainstream American film to cast two well-known heterosexual actors to play gay romantic leads in a movie. Indeed, it hasn’t happened that many times since.

Ryan Phillippe Says He’s ‘Proud’ To Have Played US Daytime TV’s First Gay Teen

June 20, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Before I Know What You Did Last Summer, 54 and Cruel Intentions, Ryan Phillippe began his career on the legenary US soap, One Life To Live. In 1992 and 1993 he appeared in several episodes of the show as illy Douglas, who just happened to be the first gay teen on US daytime TV.

Now Phillippe has been looking back on that early role while promoting his new movie, Wish Upon. He told Too Fab, “There had never been a gay teenager portrayed on television at that point. It was before Will & Grace, before Ellen came out, it’s before any of that stuff. I remember the fan mail that my mother and I would get from gay teenagers or from parents of gay teenagers who found a way in to relate to or talk to their child through this show.”

Even though he was only 17 at the time, he remembers, “understanding and appreciating that back then even when I was only a teenager myself.”

It’s a role he looks back on fondly, saying, “I’m proud to have done it, I’m proud that that’s something I can say was a part of my career.”

You can take a look at Ryan’s comments below, as well as the scenes from One Life To Live where Billy came out. [Read more…]

Crush of The Day: Ryan Phillippe Is Looking Mega-Hot For A Men’s Health Photoshoot

April 1, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There are certainly people in Hollywood who must have a painting of themselves growing older in their attics, as they never seem to age. That includes Ryan Phillippe, who’s looking pretty much the same now as he did 20 years ago in the likes of I Know What You Did Last Summer and Cruel Intentions.

To show just how hot he’s looking at the age of 42, he’s been photographed for Men’s Health, and just to help those who enjoy hot, fit guys with their shirts off, he’s posted a few pics to his Instagram. There is now doubt, Ryan must spend plenty of time in the gym, as you don’t get to look like that sat on the sofa eating junk food (which is a very sad thing).

Take a look at the pics Ryan posted below (and FYI, there are three great pics in the first slideshow post below, so make sure you click through). He sure is looking good! [Read more…]

54 The Director’s Cut Clip – Ryan Philippe & the boys try out shirtless dancing

June 2, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

54-shirtlessThe story of the 1998 movie movie 54 has passed into movie lore, with the movies finished by director Mark Christopher, but then hacked up by the studio, who removed, among other things, all reference to Ryan Philippe’s character being bisexual.

So gone was a man-on-man kiss and a scene where Philippe is behind the bar in the club and does some shirtless dancing – complete with homoerotic edge.

Although the Director’s Cut has screened at festivals before, it’s now coming to general audiences for the first time, as the full version is released today in the US on digital HD.

To give a reason to check it out, ET has gotten its hands on the shirtless dancing clip, which you can see below. [Read more…]

Reclaim Trailer – John Cusack is getting dodgy around Ryan Phillippe

August 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

reclaim-slideJohn Cusack and Ryan Phillippe are sometimes allowed in major Hollywood movies, but they spend a lot of time grafting away in the endless line of thrillers that get made and hope to do well enough on DVD to make their money back.

Reclaim certainly seems like one of those movies, with Cusack as a man involved in a dodgy adoption agency, which cause huge issues for Phillippe and Rachel Lefevre after they get a child from him.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘After their newly adopted daughter goes missing in a small town, Steven and Shannon will stop at nothing to uncover the truth behind her disappearance and the dangerous secret behind the adoption agency they trusted. Risking their own lives, they will discover just what being a parent means and how far they will go to get their child back.’

Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]
