Jason Bateman Up For An FBI Wedding Comedy

June 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jason-batemanJason Bateman recently completed his directorial debut, Bad Words, and it seems he enjoyed the experience, as he’s already developing another directorial effort, The Family Fang and now he’s signed up to direct and star in a currently untitled FBI wedding comedy for Universal Pictures, according to Variety.

Unfortunately there’s no word on the plot for the movie, and an FBI wedding comedy could go in all sorts of directions. However Bateman will direct from a screenplay by David Bar Katz (The Pest), with David Flebotte (Raising Hope) and Phil Alden Robinson (The Angriest Man in Brooklyn) previously working on the script.

The Family Fang will start shooting next month, so he presumably won’t get around to this new film for a while, by which time hopefully it’ll have a title and plot synopsis.

New Bad Words Trailer – Jason Bateman joins the National Spelling Bee

January 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After success as an actor, Jason Bateman is turning director with Bad Words, as well as starring in the comedy flick. Now a new trailer for the movie has arrived, which you can see below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Jason Bateman (Identity Thief) makes his feature directorial debut with the subversive comedy Bad Words. Mr. Bateman stars as Guy Trilby, a 40-year-old who finds a loophole in the rules of The Golden Quill national spelling bee and decides to cause trouble by hijacking the competition. Contest officials, outraged parents, and overly ambitious 8th graders are no match for Guy, as he ruthlessly crushes their dreams of victory and fame. As a reporter (Kathryn Hahn of We’re the Millers) attempts to discover his true motivation, Guy finds himself forging an unlikely alliance with a competitor: awkward 10-year-old Chaitanya (Rohan Chand of Homeland), who is completely unfazed by Guy’s take-no-prisoners approach to life.’

The film is due out in the US in March. [Read more…]

Jason Bateman To Helm The Family Fang, With Nicole Kidman Set To Star

November 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jason-batemanJason Bateman’s directorial debut, Bad Words, recently debuted at the Toronto Film Festival, and while it’s yet to reach cinemas, he’s already looking towards his next trip behind the camera, as Deadline reports that he’s signed up to direct and star in The Family Fang.

Nicole Kidman is already attached to star in the adaptation of Kevin Wilson’s book, which is about married performance artists who suck their kids into being a part of their work. When the adult children return home, they are forced to help their parents with one final piece. This brings out all sorts of resentment over how their lives turned out because of their strange upbringing.

David Lindsay-Abaire adapted the screenplay adaptation. The hope is to shoot sometime next year.

Allison Janney & More Say Bad Words For Jason Bateman

November 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of months ago it was revealed that Jason Bateman is planning to make his directorial debut with the film Bad Words. Now The Wrap reports he’s begun filling out the cast, signing up Allison Janney, Philip Baker Hall, Kathryn Hahn, Ben Falcone, and Rohan Chandz.

The movie follows a 41-year-old high school drop out (Bateman), who enters the National Quill Spelling Bee. Allison Janney will play Dr. Bernice Deagan, the director of the spelling bee group, while Philip Baker Hall will be the head of the organization. Rohan Chandz plays a fellow contestant who becomes friends with Jason Bateman’s character.

Jason Bateman Sets His Directorial Debut

July 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jason Bateman may not be at the top of the a-list, but he’s got a great reputation in the comedy field. Now he’s hoping to stretch his wings by turning director. Variety reports that he’s set to make his directorial debut with an indie comedy called Bad Words. He may star as well, although this hasn’t been confirmed.

The film is about a bitter thirtysomething who discovers a loophole in a national spelling bee’s rulebook. Although the bee is normally only open to kids, the grown man finds a way to enter himself.

Bateman’s company, DumbDumb (which he owns with Arrested Development co-star Will Arnett), will produce the movie and Darko Entertainment will finance the project. The script was written by newcomer Andrew Dodge, but it’s a hot property as it was featured on the 2011 Black List (an annual list of the most popular unproduced screenplays in Hollywood). It’s not quite Bateman’s first trip behind the camera, as he’s directed episodes of TV shows such as Valerie’s Family and Arrested Development, but this will be his first movie.
