Idris Elba Joins Jon Favreau & Disney’s The Jungle Book

March 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Idris-ElbaWith two live action versions of The Jungle Book in the works – one from Warner Bros. and one from Disney – so the race is on to get them into cinemas. Now Disney’s one, which Jon Favreau is set to direct, is close to signing Idris Elba to perform and provide the voice for the tiger Shere Khan.

Shere Khan is the deadly jungle cat who stalks and threatens Mowgli, the young boy brought up by animals in the Indian jungle. He believe Mowgli is a threat that will only grow as he ages.

Robert Legato, who was instrumental to the effects in Avatar (and won an Oscar for it), will oversee the motion capture in the adaptation of the Rudyard Kipling novel. He’ll work with production designers Alex McDowell (Man of Steel) and Chris Glass, and concept artists Michael Kutsche (Maleficent), Iain McCaig (Star Wars: Episode VII ) and Justin Sweet (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe). David Lowery (Iron Man ) is heading up the story team, which is working around the clock with seven full-time illustrators, with Legacy Effects in charge of rigging and creature design.

Disney is keen to beat Warner Bros.’ take on the classic story to the big screen. Currently Disney has the advantage, as  director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarittu stepped aside several weeks ago, and as yet there’s no replacement.

Jon Favreau In Talks To Direct Disney’s Live-Action Jungle Book

November 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jon-favreauDisney is investing heavily in making live-action versions of its classic films, such as next year’s Maleficent (based around Sleeping Beauty), 2015’s Cinderella and they’ve also got The Jungle Book in the works. Now Deadline has revealed that director Jon Favreau (Iron Man) is in negotiations to helm The Jungle Book, working from a screenplay by Justin Marks (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo).

Jon Favreau commented, “I can’t say that much, but there is an interesting take that could be very cool, and the hope is to relaunch a family brand with certain mythic elements. It is my first real family film since Elf, and there are action elements and visual effects that I feel like my experience on the Iron Man films are going to be useful.”

Rudyard Kipling novel was published in 1894 and follows a young orphan who is raised in the jungle by a bear, a black panther, and a pack of wolves. It became a classic Disney animated movie in 1967.

Dustin Hoffman & Bobby Canavale Join Jon Favreau’s Chef

July 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dustin-HoffmanTwitter is becoming an increasingly popular way for directors to announce additions to their casts, eschewing the traditional route of going of The Hollywood Reporter or Variety. Jon Favreau is following that trend by using Twitter’s Vine to release a video revealing that Dustin Hoffman and Bobby Cannavale have joined the cast of his upcoming indie comedy, Chef.

The tweet to go alongside it simply said, ‘New cast members. #Chef https://vine.co/v/hZEIHAVuwbD’, and you can take a look at the accompanying video below.

The movie follows a former chef (Favreau) who decides to set a food truck in Los Angeles. No details have been revealed as to exactly what Dustin Hoffman and Bobby Cannavale will be doing in the movie, but they join a cast that includes Jon Favreau, Sofí Vergara, John Leguizamo, Scarlett Johansson, and Robert Downey Jr. Shooting has already started in LA.

It’s currently due for release May 2014.

Jon Favreau Going Indie With Chef

April 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jon-favreauJon Favreau is best known as a director for Elf, Iron Man and Cowboys & Aliens, but he started out in the indie arena with Made, in which he starred with Vince Vaughn. Now he’s hoping to go back to independent film with Chef.

Variety reports that he’s is now in talks with financiers to write, direct and star in Chef. No plot details have been released, but Favreau came up with the idea himself, which is about an ’emotional chef’, played by the director, who is doing his very best to run his Los Angeles-based restaurant.

Favreau hasn’t completely given up on big budget films, as he’s still developing the likes of Magic Kingdom for Disney, but he’s hoping to slot in Chef as well, although there’s no news on when it might shoot.

David Fincher Rumoured For Star Wars: Episode VII, Jon Favreau Too

December 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s difficult to know with this one how much truth there is in it, but in the melee of rumour that have erupted ever since Disney bought Lucasfilm and announced Star Wars: Episode VII, a new name has emerged as a potential director – David Fincher.

Jon Favreau has also thrown his hat into the ring, with the director saying he’s “panting after this job.”

With the Fincher news it’s difficult to tell whether he’s really interested or if it’s just because he has a history with the franchise. One of his first jobs, when he was just 20, was as an assistant camera man on Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi.

Jon Favreau is a well known Star Wars fan, and even guest starred in a voice role on the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

At the moment, all we know for certain is that Michael Arndt is writing the screenplay, and that Disney plans to release this highly-anticipated sequel in 2015. Fincher would be a great choice, but it would be something very different than what he’s made before, while Favreau could also handle such a massive task after the success of Iron Man. Ryan Reynolds & Jon Favreau Teaming Up For Battle for Bonneville

October 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It appears Ryan Reynolds is hoping to team up with director Jon Favreau for the high-speed drama Battle for Bonneville, which New Regency is currently in final negotiations to acquire.

Iron Man helmer Favreau is currently busy prepping a film based on the musical Jersey Boys (and he has Magic Kingdom on the back-burner), and the current plan is for Favreau to helm Bonneville once that film is complete.

Dan Gilroy (Real Steel, The Bourne Legacy) wrote the screenplay based on the true story of half-brothers Art Arfons and Walt Afrons. The duo used to be fierce rivals on the race track, before teaming up to break the land speed record three times, using a jet-powered race car.

Ryan Reynolds and Jon Favreau will also produce alongside Mark Ciardi, Gordon Gray, Jonathon Komack Martin, and Jennifer Fox. (Source: Deadline)

Jon Favreau Frontrunner To Direct Jersey Boys Musical

June 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jon Favreau has become a big name in the directing field thanks to the Iron Man films (let’s just ignore Cowboys vs. Aliens), but he may go in a different direction soon, as Variety reports that he is being eyed as the top choice to direct the adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, Jersey Boys.

It doesn’t appear that an offer has been made to the filmmaker yet, but Favreau is currently at the top of the list, which is a surprise to many. Back in January John Logan (Hugo) was hired to write the screenplay adaptation, based on Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice’s musical, Jersey Boys: The Story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons.

The plot follows the meteoric rise of The Four Seasons. The pop group became an international sensation in the 1960s, with hit songs such as Sherry, Big Girls Don’t Cry and Walk Like a Man. There have been more that 2,500 performances of the musical since it opened on Broadway in 2005. It isn’t known when production may start on this big-screen musical or who might star.
