Gael Garcia Bernal Back On To Be A Futuristic Zorro

May 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gael-garcia-bernalBack in 2012 Gael Garcia Bernal was attached to the title role in Zorro Reborn, a futuristic take on the classic sword-swishing character, which had Ricardo de Monteuil loosely set to direct. However, the movie never happened and got trapped in development hell. However, the producers didn’t give up on the idea.

Now they’re back with Z, described as being completely different to Zorro Reborn but still taking the swashbuckler to the future. And once more, Bernal is attached to star, according to Deadline.

Jonás Cuarón (son of Alfonso), who helmed Bernal in the upcoming Desierto will direct. Cuaron also wrote the script for the movie, which is said to be set in the near future (so probably different to the full-on post-apocalyptic setting on Zorro Reborn. The plan is to shoot this autumn at Pinewood Dominican Republic studios.

The main movie almost exclusively stays in space, following Sandra Bullock’s Ryan Stone. However there’s one moment where she manages to contact someone on Earth, but there are problems. Aningaaq shows us the Earth-side part of that conversation.

While Gravity related, the makers are treating it a separate work in its own right, and they’ve even submitted it for Oscar consideration as a live-action short. Take a look below. [Read more…]
