Coco (Cinema Review) – Pixar takes us into the Mexican Day of the Dead

January 16, 2018 By George Elcombe Leave a Comment

Starring: Anthony Gonzalez, Gael Garcia Bernal, Benjamin Bratt
Director: Lee Unkrich
Running Time: 109 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: January 19th 2018 (UK)

Pixar have an amazing track record for producing excellent films that are both commercial successes and critically praised. As I write this I haven’t seen a film released by them that I would consider bad, and this sets them apart from all the other studios producing computer animated films.

One reason for Pixar’s strength is the fearlessness of creating unique worlds and telling self-contained stories without the desire to build franchises. Yes, I know that a few of their films have spawned sequels (and a prequel), but unlike a lot of studios in general they take their time with each project and spend it developing the story at its heart. As such one of my most anticipated films of 2018 is The Incredibles 2, and as long as Pixar continue not to rush their projects in order to reach release dates, then I welcome all of their future films with open arms. Gael Garcia Bernal Back On To Be A Futuristic Zorro

May 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gael-garcia-bernalBack in 2012 Gael Garcia Bernal was attached to the title role in Zorro Reborn, a futuristic take on the classic sword-swishing character, which had Ricardo de Monteuil loosely set to direct. However, the movie never happened and got trapped in development hell. However, the producers didn’t give up on the idea.

Now they’re back with Z, described as being completely different to Zorro Reborn but still taking the swashbuckler to the future. And once more, Bernal is attached to star, according to Deadline.

Jonás Cuarón (son of Alfonso), who helmed Bernal in the upcoming Desierto will direct. Cuaron also wrote the script for the movie, which is said to be set in the near future (so probably different to the full-on post-apocalyptic setting on Zorro Reborn. The plan is to shoot this autumn at Pinewood Dominican Republic studios.

Rosewater Trailer – Jon Stewart directs Gael Garcia Bernal in a new drama

August 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rosewater-pic1Many were surprised when Jon Stewart decided to take a sabbatical from The Daily Show to write and direct a movie, especially as he was taking on a serious drama for his first time behind the camera.

Now we can take a look at the first trailer for the film, which is getting decent notices now that it’s debuted at the Venice Film Festival.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Rosewater is based on the best-selling memoir by Maziar Bahari. The film is the directorial debut of Jon Stewart, and stars Gael García Bernal. Rosewater follows the Tehran-born Bahari, a journalist with Canadian citizenship. In June 2009, Bahari returned to Iran to interview Mir-Hossein Mousavi, who was the challenger to president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. As Mousavi’s supporters protested Ahmadinejad’s victory declaration hours before the polls closed, Bahari endured personal risk by sending footage of the street riots to the BBC. Bahari was arrested by police, led by a man identifying himself as “Rosewater,” who tortured and interrogated him over the next 118 days. With Bahari’s wife leading an international campaign to have her husband freed, and media outlets keeping the story alive, Iranian authorities released Bahari on bail and the promise he would act as a spy for the government.’

A November US release is set, but there’s no UK date pencilled in yet. [Read more…]

Gael Garcia Bernal Joins Jon Stewart’s Rosewater

Gael Garcia Bernal in Rudo y Cursi

Gael Garcia Bernal

A couple of months ago it was revealed that Jon Stewart was taking 12-week break from The Daily Show, so that he can make his feature-film directorial debut with Rosewater. Now he’s signed his first star, as TheWrap reports that Gael García Bernal has signed up to take the lead role.

Stewart also wrote the screenplay, which is adapted from Maziar Bahari’s 2011 book Then They Came For Me: A Family’s Story of Love, Captivity and Survival. The book recounts the author/journalist’s time in Iran, where he was supposed to go for one week to cover the country’s national elections. Instead, he was held in an Iranian prison for 118 days, tortured and interrogated by a mysterious man who the writer described as smelling of rosewater.

Gael García Bernal will play the reporter, who left his pregnant fiancée behind in London for what he thought was a routine assignment. Shooting is scheduled to begin later this summer.

Crush Of The Day: Gael Garcia Bernal

Gael Garcia Bernal in Rudo y Cursi

Gael Garcia Bernal in Rudo y Cursi

Gael Garcia Bernal stars in Even The Rain, which is out in the UK this Friday (May 18th, 2012) and it seems to me that’s a good excuse to revel in his cuteness. The Mexican actor first came to international attention with 2001’s Y Tu Mama Tambien, and since then has put in sterling work in the likes of The Motorcycle Diaries, Rudo Y Cursi and A Little Bit Of Heaven.

Luckily for us, he’s not averse to showing off a bit of skin and indeed has appeared fully nude in a few movies! We’ve gathered together a selection of pics that we think shows off just what a hottie he is, so click on any of the images below to enlarge. [Read more…]

Ricardo de Monteuil May Direct Zorro Reborn

March 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Fox is keen to completely reinvent Zorro, with a futuristic take on the swordsman. With other studios eyeing different takes of the legendary character, Fox is keen to move forward on its version as quickly as possible. A few weeks ago, Gael Garcia Bernal emerged as frontrunner for the lead role, and now Variety reports that Peruvian helmer Ricardo de Monteuil may direct.

The idea behind the reboot is to take Zorro into a post-apocalyptic era. The story will not be set in California or Mexico, but a futuristic wasteland, with Bernal as a masked vigilante bent on revenge. The film was written by Glenn Gers with help from Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy.

The movie’s not the only Zorro flick around, as Sony (which made the Antonio Banderas Zorro movies) is developing an origin story about the Mexican American hero, based on Isabel Allende’s 2005 novel simply called Zorro.

Although there’s no deal for de Monteuil to direct Zorro Reborn at the moment, he will helm Bernal’s screen test, putting him in prime place to get the job making the movie.

Gael Garcia Bernal Eyed For Futuristic Zorro Reborn

February 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For a long time it’s felt that Gael Garcia Bernal was on the edge of becoming a really big star, but for one reason or another, it’s never quite happened. However he may now have his best chance yet to hit the a-list as Variety reports that he’s in talks to play the Spanish swordsman, Zorro, in Fox’s Zorro Reborn.

Fox’s take is still in early development and is currently looking for a director. Bernal would seem to be a very good choice for the lead role, as he has the right mix of charm and bravado for the part.

Full Casa de mi Padre Trailer Hits

January 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Will Ferrell deciding to make a Spanish-language movie always sounded like a strange proposition and that opinion is unlikely to be changed by the trailer for Casa De Mi Padre. The film, made in the overblown, melodramatic style of Latin American telenovelas, see Ferrell as Armando Alvarez, who has lived and worked on his father’s ranch in Mexico his entire life. As the ranch encounters financial difficulties, Armando’s younger brother Raul (Diego Luna) shows up with his new fiancé, Sonia (Genesis Rodriguez). It seems that Raul’s success as an international businessman means the ranch’s troubles are over, as he pledges to settle all debts his father has incurred. But when Armando falls for Sonia, and Raul’s business dealings turn out to be less than legit, all hell breaks loose as they find themselves in a war with Mexico’s most feared drug lord, the mighty Onza (Gael Garcia Bernal). The film should hit cinemas later this year.

Casa di mi Padre Teaser – Who is Armando Alvarez?

December 19, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s very bizarre, but Will Ferrell is going Spanish for Casa Di Mi Padre (House Of My Father), and now a very bried new teaser for the movie has been released, asking ‘Who is Armando Alvarez?’ In the movie, Armando Alvarez (Will Ferrell) has lived and worked on his father’s ranch in Mexico his entire life. As the ranch faces financial strains, Armando’s younger brother Raul (Diego Luna) shows up with his new fiancée, Sonia (Genesis Rodriguez) and pledges to settle all his father’s debts. It seems that Raul’s success as an international businessman means the ranch’s troubles are over, but when Armando falls for Sonia, and Raul’s business dealings turn out to be less than legit, the Alvarez family finds themselves in a full-out war with Mexico’s most feared drug lord, the mighty Onza (Gael Garcia Bernal). It’s due out in the spring.
