Rosewater Trailer – Jon Stewart directs Gael Garcia Bernal in a new drama

August 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rosewater-pic1Many were surprised when Jon Stewart decided to take a sabbatical from The Daily Show to write and direct a movie, especially as he was taking on a serious drama for his first time behind the camera.

Now we can take a look at the first trailer for the film, which is getting decent notices now that it’s debuted at the Venice Film Festival.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Rosewater is based on the best-selling memoir by Maziar Bahari. The film is the directorial debut of Jon Stewart, and stars Gael García Bernal. Rosewater follows the Tehran-born Bahari, a journalist with Canadian citizenship. In June 2009, Bahari returned to Iran to interview Mir-Hossein Mousavi, who was the challenger to president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. As Mousavi’s supporters protested Ahmadinejad’s victory declaration hours before the polls closed, Bahari endured personal risk by sending footage of the street riots to the BBC. Bahari was arrested by police, led by a man identifying himself as “Rosewater,” who tortured and interrogated him over the next 118 days. With Bahari’s wife leading an international campaign to have her husband freed, and media outlets keeping the story alive, Iranian authorities released Bahari on bail and the promise he would act as a spy for the government.’

A November US release is set, but there’s no UK date pencilled in yet. [Read more…]

Gael Garcia Bernal Joins Jon Stewart’s Rosewater

A couple of months ago it was revealed that Jon Stewart was taking 12-week break from The Daily Show, so that he can make his feature-film directorial debut with Rosewater. Now he’s signed his first star, as TheWrap reports that Gael García Bernal has signed up to take the lead role.

Stewart also wrote the screenplay, which is adapted from Maziar Bahari’s 2011 book Then They Came For Me: A Family’s Story of Love, Captivity and Survival. The book recounts the author/journalist’s time in Iran, where he was supposed to go for one week to cover the country’s national elections. Instead, he was held in an Iranian prison for 118 days, tortured and interrogated by a mysterious man who the writer described as smelling of rosewater.

Gael García Bernal will play the reporter, who left his pregnant fiancée behind in London for what he thought was a routine assignment. Shooting is scheduled to begin later this summer.

Jon Stewart Taking A Break From Daily Show To Direct Rosewater

March 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jon-stewartJon Stewart has become much loved (and hated in some circles) for The Daily Show, but doing that doesn’t give him much time for anything else. He has taken small acting roles in the likes of Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back and Death To Smoochy, but in order to make his feature directorial debut he’ll be taking an 12-week break from The Daily Show this summer (with John Oliver filling in for him).

Deadline reports that Stewart is set to write and direct Rosewater, based on the 2011 book ‘Then They Came for Me: A Family’s Story of Love, Captivity and Survival’ by Maziar Bahari and Aimee Molloy. The book is about Canadian-Iranian journalist Maziar Bahari’s four-month stint in a Tehran, Iran prison. He was accused of plotting against the government.

After the ordeal, Maziar Bahari appeared on The Daily Show to promote the book. This led to Stewart and Bahari became friends, and the host starting to think about turning the book into a movie. He’s commented, “I am a television person who is accustomed to having a thought at 10 a.m. and having it out there at 6:30 p.m. and moving on, so this is a little scary, yes. But one of the reasons we are in this business is to challenge ourselves, and I really connected to Maziar’s story. It’s a personal story but one with universal appeal about what it means to be free.”

Shooting is scheduled to begin in June.
