Star Trek Beyond’s Justin Lin To Direct Hot Wheels Movie

October 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

justin-linOnce upon a time Hollywood only bought books and comics to be made into series, before moving on to other things that had built-in stories and characters. However, more recently, it seems that as long as it’s got a name people will recognise, Tinsel Town will make a movie about it.

That certainly seems to be why they’re planning a movie based around Hot Wheels cars. However, they seem to be pretty serious about it, as Star Trek Beyond and Fast & Furious helmer Justin Lin has just signed a deal to direct the movie.

It’s still early days though, as the film doesn’t have a writer and it’s not even expected to be Lin’s net movie. However, Mattel and Legendary Films thinks there’s enough brand recognise and love of vehicles moving fast, that it can build a successful family franchise around Hot Wheels – and of course sell a lot of extra toys too.

Final Star Trek Beyond Trailer – Get ready to boldly go once more

July 19, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

star-trek-beyondBefore it even started filming, some had decided that the fact Fast & Furious helmer Justin Lin was directing Star Trek Beyond meant it was going to be a disaster. However, the early buzz is that they should have had a lot more faith, with many suggesting this it the best of the rebooted Star Trek bunch.

With only a few days until release, a final trailer has been released to ensure our appetites are suitably whetted.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘”Star Trek Beyond,” the highly anticipated next installment in the globally popular Star Trek franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry and reintroduced by J.J. Abrams in 2009, returns with director Justin Lin (“The Fast and the Furious” franchise) at the helm of this epic voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her intrepid crew.  In “Beyond,” the Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.’

The film will be in cinemas on Friday. [Read more…]

John Cho’s Sulu Will Be Star Trek’s First Major Gay Character In New Movie

July 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-trek-beyond-john-cho-hikaru-suluBack in 2014, there was a bit of a furore over the fact that, despite being held up since its 1968 inception as a beacon of progressive values on things like race, Star Trek had never had an on-screen openly LGBT character (although some had appeared in books). At the time, then director of the third rebooted Star Trek movie, Roberto Orci, said he was open to the idea of being more inclusive in the film, but after that we heard nothing.

Well, the director may have changed since them (to Justin Lin), but the film is indeed getting a gay character, and it’s one of the main crew members – John Cho’s Mr. Sulu. The actor revealed the news in a chat to Australia’s Herald Sun, telling them that it’s revealed in the movie that the Helmsman of the USS Enterprise, Hikaru Sulu, has a husband back home on earth, as well as a daughter they raise together.

Cho added, “I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicise one’s personal orientations.”

Choosing Sulu to have a hubby is, of course, a nod to George Takei, who played the role in the original series and movies, and then came out as gay in 2005. He’s since become a one of the most high profile voices for LGBT rights. It’s certainly taken Star Trek a long time to have a gay character, but it’s finally happened and the nod to Takei is a nice touch too.

Another New Star Trek Beyond Trailer Arrives

June 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-trek-beyond-slideThe rebooted Star Trek has had plenty of success at the cinema, but one thing it’s been lacking is a five-year mission to seek out strange new worlds. However, now it seems it’s getting one, although as you would expect, as the crew of the USS Enterprise head off to strange new worlds, things don’t go smoothly.

The film will be in UK cinemas on July 22nd. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

New Star Trek Beyond Trailer – Chris Pine & co. head for strange new worlds & into action

May 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Star-Trek-Beyond-Teaser-posterThe first trailer for Star Trek Beyond came in for quite a bit of criticism, not least for being very action-heavy and not Star Trek-y enough for some tastes. However, with the second trailer it seems Paramount feels the best approach is to double down on the action and suggestions of lots of epic special-effects. That said, they have added a few more character moments and suggestions this fits into a larger sci-fi universe.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘“Star Trek Beyond,” the highly anticipated next installment in the globally popular Star Trek franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry and reintroduced by J.J. Star Trek Beyond Trailer – Chris Pine & co. return & are finally boldy going to strange new worlds

December 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-trek-beyond-trailer-slide1Although the first two rebooted Star Trek movies were a lot of fun, one thing they lacked was boldly going to explore strange new worlds and new civilisations. However, with Star Trek Beyond it’s been suggest the Enterprise will finally be embarking on their five year mission.

However, while JJ Abrams may not be directing (he is producing though), it appears they’re sticking with the secrecy that surrounded the earlier movie but telling us nothing about the plot and producing a first trailer which is pretty cool, but doesn’t tell us much about the plot.

You won’t be surprised to hear though that aliens are involved, one of them played by Idris Elba.

It also appears that new director Justin Lin is bringing a nicely retro feel, with the whole thing being oddly reminiscent of the 60s TV show, which makes sense if its taking place at the same time, even if it’s an alternate timeline. Of course it’s all a lot more high tech, but it’s still got a nice throwback feeling. You can take a look at the trailer below, and look forward to the film arriving in cinemas next July.

Idris Elba Is In Talks To Be Star Trek 3’s Main Villain

March 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

idris-elbaWe haven’t heard a huge amount about it for a while, but Paramount is still busily putting together Star Trek 3, and now it looks like it’s really moving forward as Idris Elba is in early talks to play the movie’s main villain, according to Variety.

Taking a lesson from JJ Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness there’s little info on what the role may be, although Variety does say ‘Early rumors suggest that Klingons would be the main villains in this movie, as they have not had a full presence in previous installments, but sources would not confirm if that was the case.’

The current plan is that the movie will start shooting in June with the likes of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Simon Pegg returning to for a third Starfleet outing. Justin Lin will director with a July 8th, 2016 release date set.

Justin Lin Heads For The Crime Thriller Times Square

March 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

justin-linAfter four instalments, Justin Lin left the Fast & Furious franchise behind, and quickly filled his schedule with all sorts of possible films, none of which have panned out so far. However he’s still trying to get something into production and now he’s signed up for another possibility, Times Square, according to Deadline.

The movie is about a young man who is torn between the local crime boss who raised him and the ex-cop who swore to protect him. The film is set during the time when authorities decided to clean up new York’s Times Square, transforming from a dangerous, seedy area to the tourist destination it is today.

Taylor Materne and Jake Rubin wrote the script, which landed on the 2012 Black List. Lin is also attached to direct a currently untitled Bourne movie, but it’s not known whether that or Times Square might come first.

Fast & Furious’s Justin Lin Producing Toymageddon

January 28, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

justin-linJustin Lin has mainly worked with Universal on the Fast & Furious franchise and also has a first-look deal there. However he’s stretching his wings as  Fox has picked up the rights to the live-action family adventure Toymageddon for Lin to produce, according to THR.

Not much is known about the plot, although the title alone should give you an idea. All that is known is that the project is based on a original idea by producer Tariq Merhab. It will be set in a chaotic toy factory. It’s being described as a live-action family adventure movie in the same vein as Jurassic Park and Ghostbusters.

The studio is current looking for someone to pen the script. Anonymous Content’s Michael Sugar, Bard Dorros and Tariq Merhab will also produce.

Lin might also direct, although that will depend on the script.

Fast & Furious’ Justin Lin To Direct Bourne Legacy Sequel

November 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

justin-linUniversal Studios has had massive success with the Justin Lin directed Fast & Furious movies, and it seems that despite Lin having stepped aside from the next movie in the fast cars franchise, the studio wants to stay in business with him. Deadline reports Justin has signed on to direct the planned sequel to The Bourne Legacy.

Last August it was revealed that Anthony Peckham (Sherlock Holmes, Invictus) has been hired to write the screenplay. Jeremy Renner is expected to return as Treadstone agent Aaron Cross, although no other cast members have been confirmed at this time. There have been some suggestions Universal is once more trying to woo Matt Damon back to star alongside Renner, but at the moment this seems unlikely.

Justin Lin will also produce alongside Frank Marshall, Jeffrey M. Weiner and Ben Smith. It’s not known when it will shoot, but the project is still considered a high priority at Universal.
