Kevin Smith & Johnny Depp (+ Their Daughters) Teaming For Yoga Hosers

August 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

johnny-deppIt’s believed Johnny Depp took a very small role in Kevin Smith’s upcoming Tusk as a favour to Kevin Smith. Now it looks like they’re planning a bigger collaboration as THR reports they’re teaming for an comic book style action-adventure called Yoga Hosers (yep, Smith’s retirement is being pushed back once again).

It’ll be a bit of a family affair as Lily-Rose Depp and Smith’s daughter Harley Quinn Smith will star, as will most of the Tusk cast including Michael Parks, Justin Long, Haley Joel Osment, Genesis Rodriguez, Ralph Garman, Jennifer Schwalbach and Harley Morenstein.

To round things off Tony Hale, Natasha Lyonne, Austin Butler, Adam Brody, Tyler Posey and Jason Mewes are also onboard.

The film ‘centers on 15-year-old yoga nuts Colleen Collette (Lily-Rose Depp) and Colleen McKenzie (Harley Quinn Smith) who have an after-school job at a Manitoba convenience store called Eh-2-Zed. When an ancient evil rises from beneath Canada’s crust and threatens their big invitation to a Grade 12 party, the Colleens join forces with a legendary man-hunter from Montreal named Guy Lapointe (Depp) to fight for their lives’.

The film is the second part of Smith’s True North Trilogy, which are based around Canadian myths and legends. While each of the movies tells a separate story they will be loosely linked together (the lead characters in Yoga Hosers will briefly appear in Tusk).

Smith comments, “People always ask me ‘Are you ever going to make a comic book movie? This is it – but instead of yet another dude saving the day, our antiheroes are the most feared and formidable creatures man has ever encountered: two fifteen year old girls.”

Kevin Smith Confirms His Bi-curious Nature After Coming Out Twitter Hoax

August 2, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kevin-smithIt seems that whenever a famous person’s Twitter account gets hacked, the only thing the person who manages to take over can think to do, is to come out as gay. Numerous celebrities have experienced this in the last few years, and the latest is Kevin Smith.

A couple of days ago his fans were surprised by the Tweet, ‘I have never told anyone this not even my family or close friends. Before this comes out I want to state that I am a gay proud man. #fear’

While many celebs went into major damage limitation mode after this happened to them, Smith doesn’t seem too bothered, as shortly afterwards he got control of his account back and Tweeted, ‘Not me. Been hacked. Proud to be bi-curious, not brave enough to commit.’

It’s not too surprising Kevin wasn’t that fussed, as he has a gay brother and has spoken before about the fact he can appreciate a good-looking guy.

And we’re sure his wife will appreciate the fact he’s not going to commit to his bi-curiosity.

Tusk Trailer – Justin Long & Haley Joel Osment star in Kevin Smith’s strange movie

July 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tuskEver since it was announced, Tusk sounded like a strange film, and the trailer does nothing to disabuse us of that idea.

Indeed it’s perhaps even stranger than we might have thought it would be – Michael Parks’ old soldier doesn’t want to die alone, even if that means holding someone hostage and trying to turn him into a walrus!

With Long tied to a chair by a madman, it’s up to his friends to find him. Genesis Rodriguez, Haley Joel Osment and Ralph Garman co-star.

Take a look at the trailer below and decide for yourself whether this is so bonkers it might be inspired, or whether it’s just completely nuts. [Read more…]

Johnny Depp Will Be Part Of Kevin Smith’s Strange Horror-Thriller Tusk

April 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

johnny-depp-slideJohnny Depp isn’t afraid of doing unexpected things just because it sounds fun, and it seems he’s at it again as it appears he’s going to have a role in Kevin Smith’s strange horror-thriller, Tusk.

It’s Tusk’s leading man, Justin Long, who made the surprising revelation in an interview with Newsday, where he refers to the film as being, “Yeah, the one where a man turns into a war horse [sic]. It’s called Tusk. Johnny Depp is in that one.”

But it’s not a war horse, it’s a walrus, with Long as a journalist who lands the story of a lifetime when he meets Mr. Howe (Michael Parks), an adventurer who has a strange penchant for the sea mammals. After he goes missing, his friends must find him. Genesis Rodriguez, Haley Joel Osment and Ralph Garman co-star.

It would be easy to think Justin Long was just joking, but it does fit with a tweet from Smith last September, where he said, ‘HE’S IN!!! HE’S IN!!!!!! #WalrusYes (More info when I can share it. Just needed to mark the highlight of my career for future reference…)’.

Johnny Depp’s role has not been confirmed, but TheWrap suggests that he may be a French-Canadian inspector named, Guy LaPointe, who looking a strange case involving a man trapped in a walrus costume. It’s only a small part, which Kevin Smith has said would be perfect for a big star cameo, as it only involves two days of filming.

Kevin Smith Reveals He’s Planning A New Movie, Helena Handbag

December 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kevin-smith-pic1Kevin Smith keeps talking about retirement, but then adds another film and another film before he does so. Clerks 3 was supposed to be his final movie, but then he added in Tusk while he got funding sorted, and now he’s planning another, Helena Handbag.

The movie, like Tusk, is based on a story from one of his SModcast episodes. In a Facebook post, Smith gave us a look at a photo of the script’s title page, which you can see below, along with quite a few details about the film. It’s early days though, as he’s only just started writing the script. You can read about it below.

Here’s what Smith had to say: ‘FOR ALL THOSE WHO TRIED TO #BeatChristzilla

‘The non-buried lead: I’m writing this new flick based on another episode of SModcast from 2008. Also: I talk about my future in filmmaking. If you feel brevity is the soul of wit, you can stop reading now. If you like to read, here we go–>

‘On the most recent episode of SModcast, I talked about my new mantra in regards to filmmaking: from now until I drop dead, I’m only ever gonna make a flick that only I would/could ever make. Jersey Girl, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Cop Out – while I love them all, these are movies anybody could make. Like ’em or hate ’em, nobody else but me could’ve (or would’ve) ever made Clerks. Or Chasing Amy. Or Dogma. Or Red State. Or Clerks II. Or Mallrats. Or Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

‘I let my view askew get standardized for awhile there – so much so that I was happy to walk away from it all for three years and do other shit. But after conceiving and shooting Tusk in less than 6 months (with the help of a shit ton of amazing professionals and a budget smaller than that of Red State), I realized that film isn’t in my blood… MY films are in my blood. And some of ’em are still in there, so I better get ’em out! And now that I’ve spent the last three years clothing/feeding/housing me and my family without a dime of movie money, I know that I don’t NEED film to pay my bills anymore. So I can make a movie when I feel like it, and if I’ve got nothing to say in a screenplay, I can just fuck off for awhile and do other shit until I do have a movie in me. Like I think I do right now. January will conclude with me and my Tusketeers getting together again – this time in Los Angeles, to shoot all the Guy Lapointe scenes we still owe for Tusk. Our composer Chris Drake (the genius behind The Dark Knight Returns animated feature score) is currently finding the music of Tusk. That means there’s not much for me to do until the end of the month. I’ll be recording podcasts and shooting SPOILERS every week (see it in Canada on Comedy every Friday at 9:30; U.S. info coming in January), but when I’m not doing that, I’ve decided to push a little whimsy again – like I did with #WalrusYes. The idea is to, once again, take an episode of SModcast and turn it into a movie. It’s worked out quite nicely with Tusk (thanks largely to the cast, the crew and the good folks at Demarest and at a24, who’ll be releasing the flick this fall), so I wanna see if I can do it again. Granted, this time the plot of the movie concerns mankind teaming up with Hell to save existence from extinction at the hands of a Rapturing giant Jesus – which means the budget has to be LOW, because NOBODY’S gonna wanna make that movie. At all. And I know this going in, so I won’t be heartbroken if it never goes beyond the script.

‘But… if the script is funny enough? Who knows? That walrus movie seemed pretty daffy and far-fetched until we were standing on the Tusk set bringing that shit to life four months and change after first making it up in episode 259 of SModcast. And right now, the aim is to shoot Clerks III this May – so this Helena Handbag picture would still be a ways off anyway. But why sit around commenting on other people’s lives and art on the internet when I can try to make some NEW art instead? As for the title: If you heard the podcast, you know (producer) Scott (Mosier) suggested CHRISTZILLA in place of HOLY CHRIST! – the title of the fake movie in the original podcast. I asked the audience to offer up their suggestions at #BeatChristzilla and they were all really fun! But I’m going with the title Helena Handbag – which comes directly from the plot of the flick (it’s kind of a nod to David Lynch’s unproduced One Saliva Bubble screenplay, too – which was also about the end of the world and also carried a title that didn’t really prepare you for what the movie was about).

‘So I’m off to write Helena Handbag. I’m gonna end this by urging you all to do something similar to what I’m doing: put a whimsy on wheels today. No pressure and it doesn’t have to result in anything: it is, after all, just a whimsy. Tend to it in your spare time but really give it care and nurture that fucker – just in case it actually turns into something. And it can turn into something, no matter who you are or how much money you have: I burned my film career to the ground, went and did other shit for three years (mostly for free), started from scratch again from a salted earth – and (unless I somehow fuck up the forthcoming Lapointe scenes) I wound up making the best flick I’ve ever made with Tusk. So go give it a shot, kids: push a little whimsy yourselves. Unless that whimsy involves hurting people. Never kill anything unless it’s trying to kill you. Today, you can waste lots of time posting your thoughts about what other people are doing/saying in life – or you can use that time more wisely, to create something from nothing that’s all yours. One path is easier, but the other path is way more fun…’

Kevin Smith Shows Off Tusk Walrus Designs

November 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tusk-walrus-design
A few days ago director Kevin Smith shared the first pic from the set of Tusk, where the helmer posed with stars Genesis Rodriguez and Haley Joel Osment. However missing from the image was Justin Long, who plays a man turning into a walrus – yes, really.

We still don’t have a pic of Long but we do have an idea what the walrus-man will look like thanks to another pic Smith has posted, which you can see above. On this evidence it’s gonna be weird.

Smith has previously said of the film, “It’s about a guy who turns another guy into a f**ing human walrus. As weird as it is in my head when I talk about it, they finally sent me the costume designs by Robert Kurtzman, and I was like, ‘Holy s**t, it’s a monster movie, I had no idea.’ I thought I was making a kind of sister thriller to Red State. As soon as I saw the designs, I go, ‘Of course this is a monster movie and he’s Dr. Frankenstein.”

Justin Long will be the human walrus, with Osment as his long lost friend Teddy, who teams up with his girlfriend (Genesis Rodriguez) to try to find him. Michael Parks also stars.

It’ll be out next year.

Haley Joel Osment Joins Kevin Smith’s Tusk

October 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

haley-joel-osmentWhile he’s waiting for the money for Clerks III to come together, Kevin Smith has decided to helm a strange, Hammer Horror style monster movie called Tusk. The film is due to start shooting soon, but the cast is still coming together, with Deadline reporting that the latest to sign up being Haley Joel Osment.

He joins the likes of Justin Long, Genesis Rodriguez and Michael Parks.

Smith has previously said of the film, “It’s about a guy who turns another guy into a f**ing human walrus. The film starts shooting next month on a $2 million budget.

Justin Long Is Going Walrus For Kevin Smith In Tusks

September 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Justin-LongKevin Smith was going to give up directing after making his hockey movie Hit Somebody. Then plans changed and Hit Somebody became a mini-series, and Smith decided he was gonna make one more film, Clerks III. But that was definitely it.

Except now it’s not, as he’s going to slot in a strange, Hammer Horror style monster movie before shooting Clerks III. The film is called Tusks, and according to EW it’ll star Justin Long and Red State’s Michael Parks.

Smith had the idea for the film after he saw a Craigslist-type posting where a walrus-obsessed man sought a roommate he could dress up as the sea mammal, as if he lived with an animal rather than a person. That set Smith’s brain whirring and now he’s set to shoot it next month of a tiny $2 million budget, while he waits for funding to be completed on Clerks III.

Kevin says, “It’s about a guy who turns another guy into a f**ing human walrus. Frankenstein.’”

Talking about the cast he says, “I wrote the script around him, so it’s nothing but Michael Parks dialogue porn. Justin Long is the guy in the walrus suit. I needed a guy who has expressive eyes because once you’re in that suit, you’re covered. I reached out to Justin and he wrote back and was like, ‘This is awfully scary but how can we not? Let’s fall down this hole.’”

Kevin Smith To Make Clerks III His Last Movie, With Hit Somebody Going To TV

December 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ever since Red State, Kevin Smith has said he’s only going to direct one more movie – the hockey film Hit Somebody. However it seems all that’s changed as Hit Somebody is now going to TV, and so Smith is now planning something else as his big screen swan song.

Hit Somebody had at one point become two films, but Smith said a few months that doing a two-parter was going to be difficult to pull off and so he was trying to get the massive screenplay down to a sensible length for a single film. That proved far more difficult than expected and so now he’s tweeted, ‘HIT SOMEBODY now a mini-series? Get the scoop on GET OLD: smodcast.com/episodes/i-mel…‘

He then added, ‘Since HIT SOMEBODY is now gonna be a mini-series, yes – that leaves room for a new final flick before I retire from directing feature films.’

But what will that movie be? Well, fans of the director had better prepare to be excited, as Kevin has said, ‘So with the HIT SOMEBODY shift, the minute Jeff Anderson signs on, my last cinematic effort as a writer/director will be CLERKS III.#TaDa’

No story details have been given for Clerks III, but it seems logical as Smith debuted as a director with 1994’s Clerks, which showed Dante (Brian O’Halloran) and Randall (Jeff Anderson) in their 20s. 2006’s Clerks II caught up with the characters in their 30s. Now Smith wants to round out his big screen directing careers looking at the men in their 40s.
