Josh Gad Takes The Lead In Sam Kinison Biopic, With Larry Charles Helming

August 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

josh-gadSam Kinison is a legend among American comedians, famed for his screaming rants and biting humour. Now he’s getting the film treatment, with Deadline reporting that Josh Gad (The Book of Mormon, Love & Other Drugs) is set to play the comic, with Larry Charles (Borat, Bruno) directing.

Rich Wilkes has come up with the script, based on the book Brother Sam by Kinison’s brother, Bill Kinison.

Kinison was born to a preacher father, and brought his father’s booming style to his comedy. In the 80s he became one of the biggest names in the stand-up world, fearlessly taking on subject few others would touch. However in his personal life he battled against depression and alcoholism before dying in 1992 when a drunk driver hit his car.

Producer David Permut comments, “There was nothing conventional about Sam Kinison and neither will be the cinematic interpretation of his life. Larry Charles is the perfect director to bring Rich Wilkes’ incredible script to screen, and Josh Gad’s tremendous ability to morph into a role will bring great depth to Kinison’s larger than life persona.”

Gad said on Twitter, “Couldn’t be more honored & humbled 2 play Sam. His comedy remains some of the most fearless I have ever seen.”

Expect to hear plenty more interesting casting, as the script includes real-life name such as Tammy Faye Bakker, Richard Pryor and Howard Stern, who will undoubtedly attract some good actors.

Russell Brand In Talks For Pierre Pierre

July 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Just the other day, Russell Brand was saying that he was backing off from the movies and preparing to concentrate on stand-up. However it appears he’s not backing off that far, as Variety reports he’s in early talks for Larry Charles’ new movie, Pierre Pierre.

The script by Edwin Cannistraci and Frederick Seton was originally picked up by Jason Reitman in 2008, with Jim Carrey attached to star. Now Borat and The Dictator’s Larry Charles is set to direct, with Brand possibly joining him.

The film is about a French nihilist who transports a stolen painting from Paris to London. During his journey he runs into a serial killer (named Pigeonshit), a French police inspector, and his own mother (who owns a brothel).

The Dictator – Opening Scene

April 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I have to admit I wasn’t a big fan of Borat or Bruno, but The Dictator looks like it could be a lot of silly fun, but with a bit of a serious point to it. Now the opening scene of the movie has popped up online, which gives you a hint about what the movie is all about. The Dictator, which bizarrely enough is partially based on a book by Saddam Hussein, sees Sacha Baron Cohen as General Aladeen of Wadiya, and tells ‘The heroic story of a dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed’. It’s due out May 18th, 2012!

Sacha Baron Cohen’s next movie seems like it’ll be a lot of fun, and this trailer is the best look at the film yet. The Dictator: Admiral General Aladeen Comments On His Oscar Ban

February 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While it’s been difficult to separate the truth from the publicity stunt, in the last few days there’s been a bit of fuss over whether Sacha Baron Cohen was planning on attending the Oscars in character as Admiral General Aladeen from his upcoming movie The Dictator. Intial reports said the Academy had banned him, but they responded saying he wasn’t banned but that the stunt was unwelcome. Now Admiral General Aladeen himself has responded to the evil westerners trying to stop his going to the Oscars, so take a look. The Dictator is out May 18th.

The Dictator Trailer – Sacha Baron Cohen oppresses the populace

December 15, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sacha Baron Cohen is back next summer as The Dictator, and now the first trailer is here, which is light on plot but big on star cameos and showing off the silliness. The film is ‘The heroic story of a dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed’. Bizarrely, it’s partly based on a book by Saddam Hussein! It’s due out May 18th, 2012, but watch the trailer below.

Bruno (DVD)

November 1, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Sacha Baron Cohen, Gustaf Hammarsten, Clifford Banagale
Director: Larry Charles
Running Time: 81 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: July 10th, 2009

I’m feeling conflicted. On the one hand Sacha Baron Cohen’s follow-up to Borat is very funny but on the other after watching the movie I couldn’t help but feel a bit uncomfortable, and not because of the way it sets up fame-whoring idiots and unsuspecting homophobes.

The basic plot is that Bruno is an arch, camp, Austrian fashionista with his own TV show, however after a disastrous accidental appearance at a fashion show dressed in a Velcro jumpsuit, he gets Schwartz-listed so he won’t be able to attend any more events. [Read more…]
