May 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Mathilda Paradeiser, Linda Molin, Isabella Lindquist, Sergej Merkusjev, Adam Lundgren
Director: Lisa Aschan
Running Time: 83 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 18th, 2012

She Monkeys is an intriguing, dark and eerie tale of two girls engaged in a confusing underlying lesbian relationship set against the backdrop of the equestrian vaulting world. With a relationship that’s brimming with physical and psychological challenges, lead character Emma (Mathilda Paradeiser) does whatever it take to master the rules of this almost twisted game, failing to resist the temptation of taking control from Cassandra (Linda Molin).

The film was shot and is based in Sweden, but is subtitled in English for all of you out there who enjoy a good foreign language film, and this film is pretty special. You can see why it won a host of awards on the festival circuit over the last 12 months, even taking the Best Narrative Feature trophy at the Tribeca Film Festival as it grips you from beginning to end even if Swedish isn’t your mother tongue. UK Poster For She Monkeys Debuts

April 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Peccadillo Pictures has revealed the UK poster for Lisa Aschan’s award-winning debut, She Monkeys, which will be released in cinemas in the UK on 18th May.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A taboo-busting modern Western, Lisa Aschan’s debut feature She Monkeys presents a trio of young women for whom gender is both weapon and toy, pushing the boundaries of political correctness to breaking point. Winner of Best Narrative Feature at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival and receiving a Special Mention at the Berlin Film Festival 2011, She Monkeys recently won 3 Guldblagge Awards, equivalent of the Swedish Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Best Sound.

‘Emma (Mathilda Paradeiser) is a girl who likes to be in control. When she tries out for the local voltige (equestrian vaulting) team she meets Cassandra (Linda Molin), a strong, attractive and vivacious girl. As they get to know each other they share a sense of wicked fun and quickly become best friends. But feelings of jealousy, competiveness and sexual attraction have them pushing each other to their limits. As Emma spends more time away from home with Cassandra, little sister Sara (Isabella Lindquist) begins to discover her own sexual identity, all the while pining for affection from a reluctant babysitter.

‘Director Lisa Aschan graduated from The National Film School of Denmark in 2005. Known for her suggestive visual language, naturalistic direction, and unique talent for telling a story in actions instead of words, she sees filmmaking as a way to explore the world, not simply give it form. Her short films In Transit and Goodbye Bluebird have been shown in film festivals around the world. Aschan directed the BAFTA award winning and Emmy nominated Danish crime TV series ‘The Killing’, from which a US remake has been made. She Monkeys is her first feature film.’
