Scarlett Johansson Will Be The Ass-Kicking Lucy For Luc Besson

April 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Scarlett Johansson at The Avengers LA PremiereScarlett Johansson must have liked kicking-ass in The Avengers, as she’s going to do it again for Luc Besson in Lucy, according to THR, which says she’s in final talks to star in the movie.

Besson wrote the script for Lucy, which is about a woman who is forced to become a drug mule. However, things go wrong when the drugs start to leak into her body, transforming her into an ass-kicking machine. Miraculously she can absorb knowledge instantaneously, is able to move objects with her mind and can’t feel pain and other discomforts.

So it’s kind of a superhero movie, but a very unusual one.

There’s no news on when it might shoot, but Besson will presumably want to start on it soon after he’s finished Malavita, which stasr Robert De Niro as a crime boss who is relocated to Normandy as part of the witness protection program, but finds it difficult to let go of his old profession

Besson, De Niro & Jones Huddle In First Behind The Scenes Shot From Malavita

October 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Luc Besson seems to spend most of his time producing an endless series of ball to the walls action thrillers, but he’s currently taking time out to direct one, Malavita, with Robert De Niro, Tommy Lee Jones and Michelle Pfeiffer set to star. Now the first behind-the-scene image has emerged, which sees De Niro and Jones discussing a shot with Besson.

Based on a novel by Tonino Benacquista Malavita is about a retired American gangster (De Niro) who is taken in by the witness relocation program and moved to Normandy, France. However, he doesn’t fit into his new lifestyle that easily. It should be in cinemas next year

Luc Besson Takes On Valerian Comic Adaptation

July 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few years ago, Luc Besson was going to retire, and indeed he did take a bit of a break from directing, but he never got over the filmmaking bug, writing and producing all sorts of movies, and more recently directing the likes of The Lady and Adele Blanc-Sec. Now he’s planning another movie, an adaptation of the French sci-fi comic, Valerian.

Created by Pierre Christian and artist Jean-Claude Mezieres in 1967, the graphic novels are about a time-travelling agent and his female sidekick, Laureline. Besson is obviously a big fan of Mezieres, as he hired him as a conceptual designer on The Fifth Element.

There’s no news on when Valerian might shoot, or indeed if it’ll be an English-language project or not. Besson is going to be busy for a while, as he’s currently gearing up to film Malavita, with Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer starring. (Source: Variety)

Tommy Lee Jones Up For Luc Besson’s Malavita

June 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s never a bad idea to cast Tommy Lee Jones in a movie, and Luc Besson obviously agress, he’s now got the action in talks to join his crime drama Malavita, according to Variety. Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer are already attached to star.

The story follows a notorious organised crime family that needs to be relocated to France under a witness protection program. They find themselves giving in to old habits and falling back into the ‘family’ way. Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer play husband and wife in the drama. Tommy Lee Jones meanwhile will be a FBI agent who looks after the family and helps them blend into their new environment.

Luc Besson adapted the screenplay from a book by author Tonino Benacquista, titled Badfellas. Shooting begins in July with the studio shooting for a 2013 release.

Michelle Pfeiffer Circles Luc Besson’s Malavita

May 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dark Shadows may not have been huge financially, but it’s certainly helped people remember Michelle Pfeiffer after she’s spent a few years in the wilderness, Now Variety reports she’s in talk for another motherly role in Luc Besson’s Malavita.

The story, adapted from Tonino Benacquista’s novel Badfellas, is about the Manzoni clan, a mafia family who are relocated to France under the witness protection program. Despite their efforts to adapt to their new surroundings, they find themselves reverting back to their gangster tactics. Robert De Niro is playing the head of this family, while Michelle Pfeiffer as his wife.

Luc Besson will direct from his own screenplay, with production scheduled to begin this August. Pfeiffer and De Niro previously appeared together in Matthew Vaughn’s Stardust and Garry Marshall’s New Year’s Eve.

The Lady (Blu-ray)

April 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michelle Yeoh, David Thewlis, Jonathan Raggett, Jonathan Woodhouse
Director: Luc Besson
Running Time: 132 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: April 23rd, 2012

Unless you’re a member of Burma’s former military junta, pretty much everyone can agree that Aung San Suu Kyi is a great person who’s had to endure a lot. However she’s also a human being, something The Lady seems to forget. Instead here she’s a saint taking on demons, which results in a film that’s informative but earnest and rather dull.

Aung San Suu Kyi (Michelle Yeoh) is the daughter of the man who negotiated Britain’s independence from Britain but who was assassinated the same year by his political rivals. However, when the film opens she is living as an Oxford housewife with her academic husband, Michael (David Thewlis), and her two children. She then returns to Burma to look after her ailing mother but once there sees the brutality of the military dictatorship, which is suppressing any and all dissent with deadly force. [Read more…]

Paul Walker Is Moving To Brick Mansions

October 27, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Hollywood seems to have a theory that if they just keep putting Paul Walker in movies, one day audiences will want to see him in something that doesn’t have the words ‘Fast’ or ‘Furious’ in the title. He’s now in talks to star in Brick Mansions, EuropaCorp’s American remake of the action-thriller District 13, according to Deadline.

Paul Walker will likely star alongside David Belle, who is credited with inventing the urban sport of parkour. Belle also starred in District 13 and its sequel, District 13 Ultimatum, and writer-producer Luc Besson apparently wouldn’t move forward on the remake unless he was involved. After all it’s the parkour that marked the movies out, so they need to ensure they’ve got the best for the US version.

The film centres on Paul Walker’s character, a detective trying to track down a stolen weapon of mass destruction in a ghetto dubbed Brick Mansions. He enlists the help of Lino (David Belle), a fearless man who knows the slum like the back of his hand (and is good at jumping about in them like a maniac).

Luc Besson also indicated one of his proteges will direct Brick Mansions, although he would not reveal who the mystery filmmaker is. No production schedule was given, but it is said that Paul Walker will likely shoot this project before Fast & Furious 6 gets started.
